So I recently aquired my ole '74 and started doing some work on it. Then I decided to start cleaning up the sludge that entailed on the block. From there I decided to start identifying this sucker.

So the first place I looked at was the pad in front of the right head and this resulted in this find:

171181665 K0214 C2R

Now I realize the majority of that doesn't really mean much but the C2R on the end means its possibly a 305 block. So I started doing more reading on ways you can figure out better what you have for an engine.

So next I took a look at my heads and they resulted in:

333882

Well that resulted in the heads being from a 350 engine. So now I have two conflicting sources of information of what could possibly be in this truck.. Either a 305 or a 350.

So the next and final place to look is the casting number located behind the driver side head where the transmission bolts to the block and after much scraping and digging and brake clean and resulted in:

3970010

So looking up this number it now reflects that it could be a 302, 327 or a 350. So now I'm at a point where between the head and the block it shows it is a 350 but the pad shows its a 305.

So is there any other 100% definitive way of finding out what I have in this truck?

I would triple check the engine code. C2R is 1982 305 but the casting is for an earlier 350.

I have 3x which is extremely baffling to me. This is a Canadian built truck so that could throw stuff off.

But everything I have read falls back to what you found out too.

Well, see if you can get a picture of it. I'm very interested as I have been doing engine code research for our trucks for awhile now.

I know it's a lot of work, but you could yank a head and measure the bore and stroke ........

What would you like a picture of? The pad stamp behind the alternator? Sure give me a bit and I'll provide. Maybe I'm missing something from it.

Considering the intake and valve covers are off removing the heads wouldn't tke much LOL.

Let me ask this...Do the digits in the first number set match the last 6 of the VIN? I believe the 181665?

Negative. This alone lets me know that the motor was changed out at some point of time in its 40 year history and that would be impossible to track down.

Something else I should mention is that the dipstick in this truck is on the left side. According to this that means its a pre 80 engine too.

I just happened upon a 3970010 block. The pad reads C6B131004 K07 something. I can not find any info on this engine code. The heads are a lego pyramid and Wikipedia says they are 9.5:1 compression heads used on 270hp applications similar to a powerpac head

sorry for the awful pic

Would you be able to help me out with any info on the engine code ? Thanks

Ill dig into the head #s tomorrow

Yeah, it's a 1977 engine which narrows it down but the code throws me off.

The pad stamping isn't complete. There's 5 more digits and the engine code is in that. It's a 1976 engine.

Well I guess I have two choices.. 1) Build this sucker as a 350 or 2) Pull the heads and measure the bore.
