Thanks I'll see if swapping it to the B port helps. All I did was swap the carb, nothing electrical got unplugged except for the choke. If that doesn't help, rebuilding the '81 carb will be my next step. Now I wish I had taken vacuum readings from each port of the '81 carb and then from the '85 carb once it was installed

I think I will just run this '85 carb for a while being mindful that I might get shot after it pops out the tailpipe, and just fully rebuild the '81 carb including bushing the throttle shaft as that is probably the only thing wrong with it.

Thanks @Craig 85 for your help and photos.

Just ordered the parts to rebuild the '81 carb. While speaking with Cliff I mentioned putting a quadrajet on the 292 and that I was considering getting one for a 4.3 v6 off of National Carb so I could re-jet it. He kindly talked me out it, said to just get a carb from ebay and rebuild it. Then I recalled having one laying around that I'd bought a kit for but haven't rebuilt yet. Mentioned that one, he said use it. So I got the number off of it, the jet and primary rod sizes, and he is going to get me the right stuff for it too. Awesome! I have two carburetor rebuilds coming up in my near future. Looks like I need to clean off my work surfaces...lol...
