Does my 1990 Suburban 1500 4x4 have open or locking Rear Differential?

Look inside the glove box, at the SPID, tell me if you see a code that says "G80"

If you do, congrats, you're an owner of the corporate low speed posi traction.
(I'll leave out all the hate about them so as to not ruin the fun)

Don't be so sure it's the Gov Lok. @89Suburban had a Burb with a G80 and his had a Limited Slip what appeared to be an Eaton unit. Maybe it was replaced at one time? But it seems someone else had G80 SPID label in a later model Burb and it too was a Limited Slip. Only way to know for certain is to remove the rear cover and ID it.

Are the $300 Yukon ones worth a damn?

You got a point there.
Was just thinking about that, someone might've replaced Giant Rock's rear end at some point.

In that white parts burb I had, the rear end was limited slip as well.
But it was obviously redone at some point, the gears were too nice, and the unit itself looked too clean.

I haven't heard many bad stories about Yukon components, all really depends on how you're treating the axle and it's locking mechanism.

I'm too old and cheap to abuse it.

Just disassembling it I know I have a 5.7, NP208, 700r4 and open diffs. I would like to know the option package, but not for $50. Weird, BMW will do it for free. 1983 it's out the window anyway. I'm adding options as I go. Mostly subtracting them.

Open diff. Not the end of the world, but your dreams of an epic mud bogging rig are over.

Seriously though, mine came the same way with open diffs. I needed more traction once in a while so I opted for a lunch box locker up front. Problem solved.
