I am working on the idea that a Detroit 4-71 will fit in the engine bay of my 79

Has anyone done a Detroit Diesel conversion of any kind? If so what engine and transmission did you use?

Thanks for the insight!!

I's think if a 6v53 can be done, so could a 4-71. You gonna blow it too? That would be bad ass.

This one would be alot of fun. The end part is actually the best part of the video so make sure you watch the last 2 or 3 minutes.

I'll be watching this closely. I want to run a 6V71 in something and would like to run a common sm465 trans, but I'm unsure of how to mate the two.

It even comes with brownies!? Lol!
I didn't see the ad, does it come with a brownie box too? That would be badass. That's kinda like an old school Gear Vendor box, with overdrive and underdrive kinda bs.

I know somebody who put one in a '70s 'burb. Next time he checks in I'll ask him. I'd call him for you, but he's one of those types that was vaccinated with a phonograph needle. Once you get him going you can't get him off the phone and I just don't have the time.

I think his was 4-53. An inline 71 series is really tall to fit in a squarebody. And don't plan on taking long trips with it unless you're going to cram it with soundproofing. Horsepower is only a byproduct of a Detroit turning diesel fuel into noise. But man, in small doses nothing sounds better than a two-stroke Detroit.

I also remember a truck magazine where a guy had put a 3208 in a Blazer with tandem axles. It was a pretty cool concept, but it was at least 25 years ago and probably didn't work anywhere near as well in reality.

Well, I got the general rundown on this. And it only took half an hour.

It was a '73 Suburban with a 4-53. He described a "bread truck" bellhousing that matched the DD to a 4-speed Saginaw. The other thing that he needed was crossmember from an earlier truck that had a different configuration, not sure exactly what, but it allowed the Detroit to bolt in. He said it was fairly straightforward, but remember he probably did it in the late '70s when more of this stuff was available.

Hope that helps.
