Here's the day one start of a flush mount bed cover build. The frame is made of 16 gauge 1 inch square tubing. The hinge is a 1 inch piano hinge. The sheets for the cover are 16 gauge 4x8 sheets of steel. It still has a ways to go. I plan on putting 2 inch flatbar around the edge and gas struts to help lift (it weighs about 200 lbs). Will try to update pics next weekend when further along. Material cost less than $200.

I am planning on putting the 1/8 inch by 2 inch flatbar half overlapping the bed and the rest overlapping the bed cover. I will put a self adhesive rubber seal under the flatbar where it sits on the bed to make it weather proof. I forgot to mention the cover rests on 1 inch angle iron bolted to the inner lip of the bed rail. When finished I plan on painting. I am undecided on painting it red to match the truck or painting it black. Maybe even rhino lining it when I do the bed ( as you can see from the pics the bed needs it). Any suggestions?

Thanks fellas, it's really not even that much work. The plate material is thick enough to weld with a wire welder but thin enough to cut with a metal blade and jigsaw. Hoping to finish it up next weekend exept paint. Going shopping for gas struts today. I couldn't find a flush mount for our trucks and the over the rails hard covers cost twelve hundred so I figured what the hell, I'd give it a shot.

I built one for my S10 I had and it worked great but like you said it is heavy. The lil extra weight gave my truck a lil better ride due to loading the springs a lil.

Heres the gas lift supports. The cover is now easy to open. All that's left is the flatbar edging. I bought the rubber seals today to put in with the flatbar.

And you are correct smurph, the extra weight seems to be a benefit. I hope it helps with gas mileage too!

Looks good. I would go with black to contrast the red.
