This is driving me crazy! My 05 Dakota battery post keep getting corroded! No matter how many times I clean them up. My batteries in the square and camaro do not do this. Not even a little bit. Wtf would cause the Dakota to do it all the time. My dad told me along time ago to put some grease on them to help prevent this. I have, and to no avail, it keeps doing it. Anyone no of a trick to keep them Clean? Here's what it looks like.

I know some viniger and baking soda works to clean them but, they don't stay clean. :banghead:

weak alternator? Probably not charging the battery correctly. Try swapping to a sealed battery. The gases escaping from the battery are really what causes corrosion. Undercharge condition corrodes the neg terminal.

Yep new battery is in your future. It’s leaking which is what causes the corrosion.

I use a spray on battery cleaner and then rinse it off then I put some spray on battery terminal protector.

You could also try the little battery post blankets or whatever, they go under the cable around the post and keep contaminants away.

X2 on the cables. My Trans Am did this and sometimes wouldnt start. New battery cables got it squared away. I also now use a terminal protector on all my vehicle batteries. No issues since.

Just keep in mind though, it is a Dodge and corrosion will always find its way through. :anitoof:

My Dad was a Mopar mechanic years ago. He always sprayed wd40 on posts when needed.

Agree on needing new cables.

I used to maintain 3000A backup battery strings and the only thing we ever used was NO-OX-ID to prevent corrosion. Some really good stuff and all I use now.

Guess that's what a Wal-Mart battery will get ya. Lol, the battery died about a 2 years ago at work and Wal-Mart is about a half mile down the road. So a buddy gave me a ride to get a new one. POS! payed about 100 for it too. I'll put some new cables on it too. Alt seems fine but, will check it when get it all swapped out. Gonna install a cold air intake on it this weekend too. So guees there's no better time to do it. Thanks for the info guys.

I have a 2007 SUV and 2001 car and all I have ever used is Walmart batteries. Never had any corrosion on posts. Can't complain since I have good luck with them. Truck had a Optima red top installed in 2015 by PO when I purchased it. Great so far too!

Crap cables cause high resistance, which lowers voltage and raises amperage, which leads to heat. Enough heat will break the bond between the metal posts and the plastic battery housing. The same rules apply to all charging and discharging. Resistance = heat.

I havent had corrosion issues with Walmart batteries. They dont last long enough to cause any problems. Thankfully (I guess unfortunately, too) the warranty process is fast and no questions asked. I tell you what though, once the replacement warranty is up those batteries are going for core.

Too much fluid in battery. Looks like its leaking from the cap.
