I have a 4L80, an 85 just has a 5 pinion planetary, totally unnecessary. The 70 is pointless.

They'll all need a standalone controller if you're not running an LS engine.

How do you like your 1st gear?

What torque converter are you running?

Are you using the flat or 'w' cross-member; what transfer case?

Turbo 6.0, first gear irrelevant.

Aftermarket crossmember, Tejas.

No transfercase, C10.

If you want to go 4l80 (or 4l85 whatever) you will need a W x-member and a North west fabs 6 bolt adapter for your tcase. I have been told that you can use the original 4l80E T-case adapter but I have yet to have the pieces in my shop to test the waters. (It's a WIP) It's commonly known if you are having a hard time finding a 4wd 4l80e for cheap you can get a 2wd unit out of certain years of 2500 work vans that had a 6.0 in them, it just takes plugging a lube hole and then shortening the shaft (I recomend using precision tools to measure and cut once rather than internet booshwa). You can tell it is the right unit if it has the 32 splines all the way from the beginning to the inner seal (meaning you have to take off the tailshaft housing to eyeball it and some people freak out about you doing that to their for sell unit.

As previously mentioned you need either a stand-alone controller or a LS PCM to control it, and short of doing the LS swap (which is what I have going on) I am not familiar with using the LS PCM on an older TBI truck but I am aware it has been done with some degree of success.

Also, you need to ensure your Tcase has a 32 spline input shaft

4l80e should be fine and easier to find. 4l70e has application where space is limited.
For me first gear works fine. All stock 4l80e with 241 t case . 411 ls computer can be set for stand alone. It is same ecm that was used on ls and old vortec motors at the same time and has been proven to work in various conversions.( Including controlling tpi, lt1 and other things)

Been wrestling with the idea of a 4l65e. I have Both a 205 and a built 208 in 2 different trucks. I am wrighting my opions.

I am aware about any of the 4L family trans. Need stand alone or LS.

I read that the 4L85(s)are gen 1 block 'friendly'.
Trying to dig deeper ..
The tranzilla 6060 seems nasty.
27 or 32 ; I could always convert the input o n the 208 to a 32 (gaining a slip yoke).
But I am definitely lacking a w-style crossmember .
