So not only is my AC Compressor clutch bad and missing a belt, but the blower motor was disconnected. I need the defrost so I want to figure out the blower first. I reconnected the wire and turned the key on to notice this noise. I tested all the climate control settings including fan speed and nothing changed even when the fan was "turned off". If I can figure this issue out, and then maybe figure out the compressor, maybe I even have some charge left in the AC. Then I don't have to worry about converting the system to r134a for a while. Anyone know what this noise is? Thanks!

Sounds like you need a new blower motor or maybe something inside causing noise. Pull motor and check out.

I just swapped mine out because it was making a bunch of noise. Ticking/clunking noise.
I think the bearings ran out so it was scraping the box. Otherwise, it worked great.

Well is it supposed to be on like that when you turn the key? I thought that was rather odd.

No, that sounds more like a bad switch or something
So does that mean I could have another problem besides replacing the motor?

No, the motor runs on low when key is on. That is how mine does. Don't think there was a change from 74 to 78. I don't like it either, that was the design. It use to be called "Flow through ventilation" or something like that. I just live with it. I got my motor from NAPA on the 74 and also on a 72 5 years ago. If you notice on your fan speed switch there is no "Off".

Well if it's coming on automatically when you turn the ignition key, yes.
Unless your fan switch is on when you turn the key on.

Do all the trucks do that? I don't think my later truck does.

I found this pic online. It is suppose to be 78. If you look and fan switch close, the lowest setting is LO. There is no off. This is the same as my 74.

Does it still run if the top slider is set to "off"?
Maybe my old motor was stuck and wouldn't spin, and the new one is too quiet for me to hear on low?

Regardless, a new blower motor with cage was $20 at advance auto and took about 2 minutes to install, so I'd start there.

Yes. It may be different on later models, I just don't know about those.

I don’t know the cutoff, but on most or all of the 70s trucks at least, the blower motor will always run on low to provide some ventilation, even if everything is set to off. I’m not sure if my 79 with AC does, but I know my heat only 77 did. That being said, yours is really loud. I’d replace the blower motor for $30 and 5 minutes of your time.

I had the same issue and this fixed it. The male plug on the blower has 2 contact points that ground against the blower frame itself. You can’t see them unless you take apart the motor. Fairly easy, all you need is to take out the blower and use needle nose pliers to separate the connecting “wings”. I used gorilla glue and glued it back against the frame of the blower so it made a connection better. I stayed away from getting any glue on the contact points themselves. Put it back together and sounded smooth as butter afterwards. When those contact points are weak it makes the connection jump on and off and makes that motor jump around causing the noise you hear.
