Thoughts on 9 in ford in 81-87 square body? I’m considering it.

9 inch fords can go in anything. Strip the axle housings and weld up the appropriate brackets and tabs. Nothing special there.

Unless you're going racing, or working on a multi-link rear, why?
For the same reason people put GM engines in everything for decades, good design, reliability, performance and huge aftermarket support.

I don't mind the GM 10's & 12's that came in these trucks but am not opposed to the 9" either. I wouldn't swap out a 14 bolt for a 9" in most scenarios though.

Your truck & your money, do whatever you want and ignore the haters.

Depends on your setup, the purpose of your truck and your budget. There's several options for aftermarket 9" axles that will bolt right into our squares. If you've got crazy horsepower and a decent budget, you may need it. But the 10s and 12s are plenty strong for most setups. I've got my 10 bolt built up the same way that a few guys local to me are putting 7-800hp through with no issues.

Or like they said above, you can always take a factory 9 and just cut off all the other brackets and weld on what you need. There's tons of options
