Hello

i am about to convert my 1987 from a manual stick shift, to an automatic.

the transmission came with a kickdown cable. the guy i got it from sold it CHEAP because 3rd gear burned out and began slipping.
i suspect, because he did not have any kind of lock-out switch.

im thinking of going with an external lock out switch

as opposed to an internal lock out switch

for 2 reasons,
1- easier to install
2- simple manual electrical switch for OD on and OD off. no vacuum or anything.

who has done this before?
what did you chose and why?
hindsite being 20/20 what should I** do and not do when doing this?

thank you!
cheers!

I'll be putting a 700R in my truck and I'm in the process of building one for my Nova now, both will just have a toggle switch which I will mount on the shifter, positive and ground wire that's it, I will have complete control of the lock up not when the tranny wants to lock/unlock the converter..

make sure tv cable is adjusted before driving and can set to auto lock in 4th gear. Add a lock up disconnect switch on the dash when getting on it at higher speed or towing. Or go with internal kit from tci. I drove with a toggle switch for a month in my suburban(4l80e) and i did manage to almost stall it coming to a traffic on the interstate couple of times. Was happy to set it back to auto mode after fixing the speed sensor issue.

yeah i'll have to watch some videos on doing the TV cable correctly.

im still unclear on what this switch does exactly.
im even more unclear on what happens if you dont have one.

if i understand that i can understand the best parts to install.
im just picking that first one lol

why do you reccomend the internal one?
i noticed that that one comes with the option for a vacuum switch or manual-electric switch.

You're not always going fast enough for overdrive, but the rpm's can still be a little high in 3rd gear and the lock up will drop it down to a more reasonable rpm, lock up is almost like having another gear, as far as coming on traffic or a stop no different than having a manual trans except you don't have to use your left foot, lol....... YES, TV cable adjustment is critical it controls line pressure through the gears but nothing complicated about it..

so.... if i have a manual lock switch... i have to flick it on ONLY in 3rd gear, and then flick it off?

sounds like that is an advantage over a vacuum controlled switch.

i often drop my 2001 chevy into "OD off mode" driving around town or for hilly terrain.

With just a toggle it's full manual lock/unlock in any gear at any speed whenever you want, it won't do anything unless you flip the switch, so you'll have to remember to always unlock before you come to a stop(you could hook it up to the brake light), if you don't care for that then a kit may be what you want..

The two common options for automatic lockup are either the internal wiring link that you have posted, or wiring lockup to engage in 4th gear unless the switch in the cab is turned off. Remembering to switch it on/off all the timr gets old very quickly.

I wired mine on the fourth gear (OD) pressure circuit on the trans with a simple oil pressure switch. Run fused(15a) switched 12vdc from the cab to the pressure switch, from the other side of the switch to the 12vdc in on the TCC plug on the trans, then ground from the TCC plug to the trans case. I can leave the switch in the cab on and my lockup only engages when fourth gear (OD) engages. It simply disengages when coming to a stop because the trans downshifts automatically.

Here's a link to an explanation!

the guy at the transmission shop is telling me that he can install a custom valve body that will provide lock-up hydraulically all with input from the TV cable.....
this sounds like a better way to go
who has done this?

Sounds expensive and over the top in my opinion.

So I'm trying to do the same thing with the toggle switch and an oil pressure switch. But I have 3 wires coming from my connector. Anyone know how to handle this?
