I bought a really clean 76 GMC C15 (250 6 cylinder, three in the tree) last year, and the only real issue with it was the exhaust system. Both the cat and the muffler were shot, so I eliminated the cat and ran 2.5" pipe from the take down pipe through a Summit Race muffler (2 chamber). I wasn't happy with the sound (loud) so I installed a Walker Tru-Fit muffler. That helped a lot (nice sound at idle) but it is still too raspy under load.

I know an inline 6 cylinder will not sound like a healthy V8, however, this setup makes an otherwise nice truck sound cheap. Before I waste any more money on mufflers, anyone have a thought here? Would adding a glasspack muffler act as a resonator? My current setup has the exhaust dumping in front of the rear wheel. I'm sure that is part of the problem, with the tailpipe kinda in my ear but I am looking for a simple (cheap) solution.

Add a tailpipe and dump it out the back. It will be quieter in the cab.

Thanks for that suggestion....I was not so much concerned about the noise in the cab as the overall quality of the exhaust sound. I just installed a Cherry Bomb muffler in the same spot that the cat conv used to sit, and that really did the trick. I now have the Cherry Bomb feeding into the Walker Tru-Fit muffler. Problem solved!
