'90 should still be Mark IV. Gen V came out for the '91 model year.

No experience with Gen V’s but I can report that a carbed Gen IV 454 will be a very big upgrade from the 305. It’s got 49.2% more cubes!

To give an idea of the performance of a first year Gen V we can look at the 1991 Chevy 1500 454SS. It got 9 city and 12 highway mpg’s for a combined rating of 10 mpg. Its first year Gen V big block sported 255 hp at 4000 RPM and 410 lbft at 2400 RPM. This was transmitted through a 4.10 ratio rear axle and 4L80E four speed electronic overdrive transmission. I think 0-60 was 7.6s and 1/4 mile was 15.6 in the upper 80 mph’s. It would seem that the Gen V in its stock form was not much faster or more powerful than its carburated bretheren.

There really was zero performance gain with the Gen V, most of the changes were for improved reliability.

It's a strong block but with the heads they will never produce any reasonable power.

My 496 with 781 heads gets better mileage than in it's 454 setup.
