Uh... are these those elusive gears everyone says they want or do they serve a good purpose or... what? My rpo sticker says 4.10 and I just thought Id ask, because i thought they were the one people made a big deal about.

It is a popular ratio for heavy towing if you have stock tires and it is a pretty good ratio for putting on larger tires after a lift.
Way better than 3.08 or 3.23 that were in some vehicles.
Not great for gas mileage, but meh.

Oh okay, that explains a lot. Does it especially benefit from 4lo when multiplying it by its reduction? Do you think it aids in moving snow? I dont do any on-road use with this truck, but if a smaller ratio would be better for that I would. But it seems that I have a good gear setup then?

The lower gears like 4.10 are good for any sort of work. It will be good for snow plowing, and even better torque when in 4 low.

4.10 as stated will be good for grunt work and poor highway mileage. But you're not going on the roads so it won't matter. If you got 'em, rock 'em.

I put it to the test, I pulled my 1/2 ton frame out of its spot with minimal effort when all 4 tires sunk in the ground and were flat.
I put my truck in 4lo, Low(1st gear, is L not 1st) and essentially idled it out. I ilost traction once and that was from ground ripping. I put some sand in the tread path.

Based on my unscientific survey, 4.10 was the most common ratio on the higher GVW 3/4 ton trucks.

4.10 works fine with a non-overdrive transmission (highway rpm is a little high), but really shines if you have overdrive. It’s also a good ratio with up to 33” tires, and is not bad with 35’s unless you do serious off-roading.

Also, in later years of square body trucks, GM used some really lame gearing on half tons ( as high as 2.73 and 3.08), so those guys drool over the thought of having 4.10 gears.

Yup, I'm swapping to 4.10 myself. Currently 3.42s. Had 4.10s in my '78 Stepside and I loved it.

You forgot the 2.56:1, I have a spare set if anyone needs them.

That should be the ratio. Normally the tag gets tossed.

Bringing this thread back to life. I don’t have the pro codes in this truck, but according to vin decode, 350/th400, the gears are 4.10s. The rpm’s are really high, even at low highway speeds. Wish there was a way I could verify.

Only way to verify rpms is with a tachometer, unless someone on here has an alternate method
