I'm pretty sure my '83 C15 has a 3spd tranny. Are there any advantages? The motor in there now is a 350 out of a '79 camaro that was rebuilt in '04.

Sorry I just realized I posted an incomplete thought. Are there any advantages of a 3spd over say a 4 or 5 spd?

The 3 speed autos are definitely a lot stronger than the 700R4 4speed that came in the 82-90 squares. I think starting in 91 or so you could get Burbs and Crew Cabs with the 4L80E in the squarebody style, but those are a little more pricey. You really have to have pretty short gears to make a 700R4 survive for the most part.
