292 smog pump removal

I removed all the smog equipment from my 292. Thought I could remove the smog pump and tighten the belt with my power steering pump. It is mounted solid. Any ideas about brackets or idlers that might work with a v belt. Or would a different power steering mounting bracket from a different year work. Found lots of serpentine belt idlers to delete smog pump, none for a v belt application. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I will try and get some better pictures tomorrow these are not very good.

Well the 292 did at one time come without a smog pump, so I'm sure there is a P/S bracket out there that is adjustable, but actually locating one might be a problem. I'm not going to quote them all but if you do a google search for "chevrolet 292 adjustable power steering pump bracket" You'll get a bunch of universal bracket kits for P/S. Maybe look though that and see if one of them might work for you.

This isn't really right, but I've see guy do this. If you can figure out how big of belt you would need you might be able to jump it onto the pully. But you gotta get the right sized belt and it'll only last until it needs to be adjusted which you can't do. Again not the right way to do it, but if you need the truck up and running now, it'll get you by for a while.

My I ask why did you take it off to begin with? If the pump was functional it wasn't hurting anything. If you're still running a cat the air pump helps that thing out ya know... I'm just asking, maybe the better choice is to reinstall the pump or get a replacement.

Thanks for that great info. Taking the pump off was started by previous owner (he had most apart and cobbled up with weird plugs on engine and hose blocked with bolts) the pump hose was disconnected but the belt still turning the pump. Not running a cat so shouldn’t be an issue. The air pump is still working and engine is running although not well, needs timed. Took it for a drive to the mail box today sure is fun to drive. New shocks arrived today so they will go on sometime soon. Trying to make an appointment with exhaust shop for new exhaust. It’s coming along. Have some electrical demons to track down also.

Honestly this might be the preferable way to do it. Tho, that alternator should have a pulley like this

but im just basing it on that stock photo of these brackets, not sure what it would end up like on yours
The PS Pump inner pulley is used to drive the pump the outer pulley to my understanding is always intended to be the idler or secondary driven but I dont remember where I read that

Makes sense to me.
