This thread kinda got abandoned.
I'll admit I haven't done a thing besides started pulling the rear axle out.
Front axle is out already.

But I'm in a planning stage.

First up is the front spring hanger I'll make

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't standard centerpin distance 31.5 or 32 on 1/2 and 3/4 ton?
I need to measure the s10 frame and compare to the axle, worst comes to worst, I'll make my own new pads for it and just weld those on.

Pretty sure it is 31.5".

Suppose I can check when I get home, but I was pretty sure.
I recall specifically from when I was gonna retrofit a super 60 front axle into a k5 with a 70hd rear end.

Good times.

Can someone define the difference in a Chevy 8.5" and 8.6" rear end?

I was looking over gearsets on the web for 10 bolts, I'm looking for 4.56's, but I'm finding gear sets for a 8.6" ring gear... Is this a typo?
Or just some generalized terminology for the 8.5"?

8.6 must be a later year 10 bolt axle.
Am I right?

Anyone know of a stout aftermarket axle shaft for the rear end?
Regearing to 4.56, maybe Lincoln rear end.

If youve got a 10 bolt id use 30 spline axles. I swapped my 78 12 bolt to an 87 10 bolt, i already had 30 spline axles so i bought an aftermarket clutch posi to fit 30, swapped in my axles and switched my backing plates and brakes to stay stock with the truck. Only other change i made was swappin in the posi instead of open gears, i kept the 3.42 ring and pinion from the 87 rear.

I was browsing around on the web, seemed the 30 splines are the way to go.

I believe you are correct sir, I think that the 8.6" is around model year 2000 and later in 1/2 tons

Rear end out!
Time to strip it down, regear, and if needed cut shock and spring pads off to relocate in the old s10!

So, while @bucket was here in Salisbury NC and trading parts with me, he made a suggestion, to use the np208 in the parts suburban I have behind the 4l60e in my s10, to effectively change drop sides, thus eliminating having to cut the tubes and switch drop sides on the 10 bolt... I think it's a great idea. I will look into this, because if that's a realistic possibility, I'm gonna do it.
And of course whatever modifications are needed to make it work (machine work etc) I can do them here.
Maybe while I'm at it, I'll clock it down a little bit since I'm not going to be cutting the axle and kicking the pinion up at the same time...

Yeah, maybe someone here can confirm, that 208 and matching 6-bolt round adapter should bolt right up in place of the S10's 5-bolt round adapter and 231? T-case.

You may just have to deal with dropping the trans crossmember some and maybe clearancing the floor some too.

I have the last transmission that was in the s10 sitting to the side, I'll have to pull the t case from the burb sometime and take that adapter and see if it works.... When the time comes, lll post the results

To add to that, I think it's a np241, and there's the Manual shift variation that's a np233

The adapter you laid hands on is a 4l60e to np233 @bucket

I cannot recall if there is a 4l60e to np241 adapter, but I wanna say there was last time I put a trans in the s10 for the 3rd time

Edit again: 4l60e/233 adapter has provisions on it for the shifter to bolt to.
