Ok I'm gonna try to do a post on the build of my 1987 Chevy R30 One Ton Dump we call "Rusty". I am new to the site and hope I can get all this figured out and stay up to date. I never do posts on stuff I build but after seeing all the great builds I had to jump in. I am half way into the build so I will post as many of the pics I have from the start and what I have done. This truck is what happens when you online bid and forget what the hell you bid on. Then a month later you get a invoice...

So..$1500 bucks later and another $800 bucks in haul and Rusty made it from New Jersey to its new home in Indiana.

I rebuild wrecked street bikes and always wanted to do a full resto and rusty just became my first.

1987 R30 with a 5.7L TBI with 78K miles. 4spd manual with a Crysteel bed. Had a plow but was removed. Oh ya and lots and lots of rust....:whymewhyme:

Couldn't wait so I had to get the bed off and see how bad it was.

Was way worse than I could imagine. Took cab off and stripped motor and tranny.

Never seen a motor and tranny covered in so much crap in my life. Took them out back and sand blasted them.

Had the frame sandblasted and what a difference it made.

I used POR 15 and did all the steps on the frame. Cleaned it, etched it and put two roll coats on and then sprayed two coats of there top coat. Replaced all the rivots I cut off with grade 8 bolts...what a bitch that was...

Then my wife takes a new job in Northern Indiana and I have to move everything.

Made dollies for the heavy stuff and hauled them 2hours north to a house we purchased while we look for land. Not happy I don't have a shop anymore....:lazer:

After a long move and having all my tools in storage and just the essentials at the new house I started back up. Finished the motor and installed it in the frame. Comp checked all the cylinders and I was 150 on 7 and 149 on the last one. Was happy enough to leave the inside alone. The truck ran great when I picked it up. New double roller, intake, new water pump, extra quart pan and better pump. New pulleys and fan and went thru the tranny (which it looked great inside) so I painted it and threw in new clutch and new seals.

Purchased all new front end parts except the springs. New upper and Lowers, Bilsteins and all the tie rod ends and misc crap. I then went OCD and POR 15 all the tie rod ends and front steering parts. Blasted and POR 15 the spindles also.

New hedman headers which let me ditch the air which I hope does not come back to haunt me. All new sensors and MSD goodies. Plug wires and found some chevy bowtie wire holders. Headers were tight so I purchased plug boots. I also had to notch the frame on both sides to have room.

Cleaned and painted the PTO and found a stripped gear. Gods looked down on me and I found one in a junk yard up here for 25 bucks. :angels2:

Sandblasted and POR 15 the rear end. Found I had a chipped tooth in the pinion gear. Was not happy. Got great help from Randys ring and pinion and replaced all new with Yukon parts and even was talked into a locker. I pulled the springs apart and blasted and POR 15 each spring individually. I then got some liners from Detroit spring and was really happy with the way it turned out.

All new brakes and drums and OCD kicked in again so I POR 15 the dam drums.....

Also I used energy suspension on the rear, tranny, and motor mounts.

I had been staying away from the cab due to the amount of beer it was gonna take to fix....

Stripped the cab...still can not believe how much crap is on and in a chevy cab especially since this truck had no power or options.

Loaded it up and took it to a sandblaster I have used for years. He is really good about not warping panels. After I swung by a painter and had him epoxy it with PPG ESU 430.

Cab floor is so bad. Had to replace both floor braces before I could even get it on the frame. Was a PITA to install braces due to the rockers being rotted away and almost nothing to go off of.

All the metal arrived from LMC truck. So glad wife was at work while it was being unloaded and unpacked. I feel I got very lucky as all the metal came without a single ding or dent.

Doors, fenders, hood, core support, cab corners, floors, rockers and kick panels. :)
