Back in 1992 when I was 20 years old I had a 1984 shortbed Silverado that I absolutely loved. I drove it across country twice and, being young and stupid, beat the snot out of it. Eventually the transfer case let go and I sold it. It took me several years to really regret what I had done. As I got to be old and stupid I have come to a place in life where I can finally take on a project and relive my youth. Since my wife won’t let me get a girlfriend I decided to find a square body. For years, off and on, I would look through Craigslist. About a month ago I finally got serious, I looked coast to coast trying to find a project that was in my budget (smaller than me after a cold swim) and not such a basket case that I would be over my head. I got lucky and found a truck in a nearby town that was in my price range. It was advertised for $3,500 and the the guy said he had removed the old 305 and replaced it with a 350. Other than that the ad didn’t say much. Now, I live in Massachusetts where rust is way of life. I didn’t hold out much hope that the truck would be solid. In typical fat kid fasion I sat on my hands for a while. Contrary to my normal luck the seller reposted the truck for $2,800! I went and looked at the truck and was pleasantly surprised.

The truck is a 1985 Chevy Silverado 4WD shortbed. The factory 305 was R&R’d with a 350 that the seller did some work on. I wanted a manual transmission and, low and behold, it had a factory oddball NP833 4speed. It has working dual tanks and is a factory A/C truck as well as havingpower locks and windows. Now the best part, the body seems solid I threw a magnet on the rockers and cab corners and anywhere else where body filler hides and it seemed solid. I didn’t see any rot on the floor pans. The bed floor is solid and all the body panels are straight. There was body work on the bed sides behind the rear wheels.

The seller mentioned a patch on the frame so I crawled under and looked at the repair. It seemed to be done well but there was a small patch of frame rot on the driver side about the the front bed mount was. The rest of the frame looked pretty solid.

The engine seemed to run well and the truck was registered and being driven. I took it for a ride and it seemed good to me. I have to admit I was a little excited. Putting on my best game face I offered the seller $2,000. The seller said he couldn’t let it go for less than $2,300. I couldn’t contain myself and agreed! Now I had to explain to my wife what I did. She already hates me, what could I do? Then I had an epiphany, a “Father Son Project”! It couldn’t fail! And seeing how my boy won’t be driving for 3 more years I have an excuse to why it is taking up so much space in the garage.

So this is the start of my Mid-life Crisis project. I hope it goes as well as I dream it will

The cab corners and rockers look clean and I don’t think they had been done before 19D3B5AF-2D46-4DFB-B8F1-832AACBC3A44.jpeg 3755F658-BCCC-4BC3-9222-06C9AA38E223.jpeg

So the plan is to get it home from work and try to get the bed off. It is suppose to rain wicked hard this weekend so we will se if that happens. Once the bed is off I can really evaluate the frame and see what direction I should go in

Man you stole that thing! It looks like it’s pretty much loaded. I’m jealous of that transmission, I’d rather have it over my 465. If it was me, I’d paint it, put some 31’s on some rally wheels and enjoy it. But I also like stock trucks.

Looks like a score and a half. Congrats.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it. Also, IMHO, she's survived this long being relatively unmolested, I'd try to keep it that way. But,... your truck, your decisions.

I got it home from work today. I took out the bed mat and hosed out the truck bed. I’m thrilled the floor looks spotless..... my boy wanted to see how he looked in the drivers seat EBB5327F-FA0E-47FB-A99C-7B381E1B3721.jpeg BF45F195-7CA3-4987-9A68-B2EB16D244CD.jpeg
