Get a pot boiling with water , like a spaghetti pot 2 or 3 gallons. Add a cup of powdered TSP and boil your lock mechanism for 15 -20 minutes. All that old shit and white grease will come out. The wash it with Zep purple from home depot then hang out to dry. After dry you can strategically grease it. I used that green waterproof grease.

I had planned on putting the drivetrain in last weekend but ran into a roadblock. I put the shift lever back in to bang through the gears before mounting the tranny to the engine , 1st , 2nd , 3rd , 4th No Go , reverse , No Go. “Fother Mucker !!!! If its wrong there’s nobody to blame but me. I rebuilt this tranny and topcover .. so i pull the cover and I run the procedure again and I cant get it in neutral. WTF ? Now I’m shitting cuz I think i gotta pull this thing apart completely a truly demoralizing proposition. After sliding things back and forth for what seemed like an eternity voila Im spinning the input shaft while The gears im holding arent spinning. . Now i set the reverse idler gear , set the shift forks in position reverse fork being the critical one. Reverse fork into idler gear ? Check. Now I actually sight the other two forks enter their grooves and the top cover plunks down with attitude to which i quickly send two bolts home before the cover has a second opinion. A screwdriver down the hole to slide the reverse fork rearward so the shift lever can be installed. Now the moment of truth. 1 st - 2 nd - 3 rd - 4 th YES !!!! Reverse YES .. Hallelujah. So now you know that its possible to install the topcover incorrectly ,,

This motor didnt come with the Z bar hole drilled so I had to drill it 29/64 th and tap it 1/2”-13. Which presented another problem namely tapping a shallow hole.

So I sunk the tap as far as it could go and it left the ball stud shallow and not seated because of the lead in on the tap. So I got a cutoff wheel and buzzed the lead in section of the tap off. This gave me another 1/4” of cut threads finally allowing the ball stud to seat fully. I was shitting doing this whole operation freehand. Luckily nothing broke in the hole.

I totally forgot that my Z bar and ball stud go in the hole in the bellhousing not in the block so i wasted an hour and cut up a 1/2” tap for nothing.

This is how they came from the factory ( transmission crossmember ) bolted in with long spacers. The engineers put this in to facilitate some frame flex. I’m recreating it here with some thick wall tube

I believe you have a NP-205. What cross member do you have? I have the "W" style in my K30 and it lays inside the frame rails with the spacers located on top of the crossmember facing up.

Mine came with two of the same crossmembers , flat style. I’m positive that my transfer case is not mounted correctly. It is the venerable NP 205. I took the whole thing apart last year and rebuilt it. I added the JB customs twin stick w/ shift rails. If you have a photo of yours I’d love to see how its put together ?

The pre-'85 K30 crossmembers mount to the underside of the frame.

I have an 80 K25 with NP205. I have the flat crossmember. Crossmember goes on bottom of frame with the spacers and nut on top of frame. The Adapter attaches to crossmember with the Big U mount on top and the little block mount underneath.
