Death wobble, or bad wheel balance?

It’s 19k lbs loaded and 15.7k empty. I bought this 84’ k20 C6P in hopes of rebuilding it and putting in a Cadillac 500 with a 4l80 to pull it.

Death wobble, or bad wheel balance?

That’s right, it is for sale. I got it specifically to pull my fifth wheel, and now that I know it won’t….

Death wobble, or bad wheel balance?

It rides much better now- no wobble at all. Ultimately, I think it was bad balancing of the new tires. I went back to D T and asked them to rebalance them because of what was happening and now it drives and rides great. Well, except a little steering slop. I’m going to do the jeep steering...

What have you done to your square lately??

This crane. Helped me load my bike all by myself.

Tires Plus says my Dually tires are too heavy to balance.

I think that might be my problem, too. My tires are 65lbs and rims 44. After I had them put on, felt wobbly.

    Shocks are like steel bars.

So, maybe the cause of the “steel bar” feeling? Truck rides so much better now. Replaced springs and shocks.

    Shocks are like steel bars.

@bucket yeah, they didn’t include any bushings and they didn’t even specify that you needed different bushings. I ended up purchasing energy suspension, regular replacement bushings, and they were wrong. When I called and complained today sent me the right bushings. Lol.

Death wobble, or bad wheel balance?

Replaced steering box, shocks, stabilizer and 4” springs. Gonna take it for a spin. Hope death wobble is gone.

Death wobble, or bad wheel balance?

@Grit dog I haven’t finished putting it on yet. Maybe I’m tired and not thinking straight. The box info card stated the box is already centered (about 1.6, or 1.7 turns each side). So, I line up the flat spot on spline shaft to flat spot on steering shaft, but in order to do that, I have to...

Death wobble, or bad wheel balance?

@Grit dog they gave me another, no questions asked. Hopefully it works.

Death wobble, or bad wheel balance?

Yeah, I did and I don't plan to. See if they notice. lol

Death wobble, or bad wheel balance?

@Grit dog I've determined no tie rod problems, no drag link problem. Rag joint is tight, but when I grab the steering shaft and move it, the play comes from the box. @GTX63 Interesting, I did 'adjust' the box a lot, so I wonder if this could be the same scenario.

Death wobble, or bad wheel balance?

@Grit dog any experience with other steering boxes like Detroit Axle?

    Shocks are like steel bars.

    @legopnuematic , I think the originals are 3” and these are 2.5”.

    Shocks are like steel bars.

@Rusty Nail yeah, jounce is a perfect descriptor. Lol Mostly everything I read says that new leaf springs aren’t as wide as the shackles, but of course the sleeves/ bushings are. If I keep these springs, I would have to switch to 7/16 front spring bolt also.

    Shocks are like steel bars.

@DoubleDingo the stock springs on this truck have a negative arch and the PO had blocks up front, so I was trying to right the wrong, but now I have Summit racing selling me springs that I don’t think are correct. The front eyelet isn’t even big enough for the 9/16 bushing. They even sold me the...

    Shocks are like steel bars.

@Rusty Nail the sway bar was parallel with the ground. The problem, aside from being so old, was the PO put on 3” blocks up front with the OEM shocks. The shocks were old, dried out and hyper extended, so they were seized. Did you see the pic I just posted? The leaf spring isn’t as wide as...

    Shocks are like steel bars.

Can someone tell me if this is acceptable? The people at summit have no clue about it. The sleeve is the width of the shackle, but as you can see, the leaf spring itself is not

Death wobble, or bad wheel balance?

I'm going to replace the steering box- again. I know everyone loves Borgeson, but I really don't want to spend $600. lol Any other quick ratio just as good? Detroit Axle?

    Shocks are like steel bars.

@Grit dog @Turbo4whl It was the shocks. I disconnected them and took a little ride. Night and day difference.

Death wobble, or bad wheel balance?

Yes, I drove it about 50 when I first got it and even in city driving, it was pretty sloppy and the wheel was off center then. So, I got this crapzone one and I'm hoping it is the problem. Now, I don't know if I should get a borgeson, or do the crossover thing... I'm going to get through this...

    Shocks are like steel bars.

No, the parts are still staring at me, waiting for me to put themto work. lol I am siking myself up right now. That's what I had read, and hoping it is, but the PO had put blocks up front, so that's why I bought the springs. I sure hope this works. I'm good with that, as long as it doesn't...

Death wobble, or bad wheel balance?

@squaredeal91 I read that somewhere as well. I’m gonna have them check the balancing on the new wheels/tires, but I do have a bad ball joint in passenger side. Yes, it is a K20.

Well, if all this doesn’t help, I’m gonna drive it off a cliff. Lol

Death wobble, or bad wheel balance?

@idahovette @RanchWelder @Grit dog The pitman arm nut was still tight when I checked it. The steering box is an autozone box, so maybe it’s the problem. I can grab steering shaft with pliers and move it approx 10 deg, maybe little more and there is no play in rag joint. If I try to move...
