Did this K20 come factory with catalytic converter?

Juke The best answer to any questions asked about engine originality is "I was told the engine was been rebuilt" nothing more. Butch

454, 1987, lower oil dipstick Bolt

Apologies, came across this late. Been wrapped up in prepping and eating WAY TOO MUCH turkey and fixins. The parts manual (pics attached) says for an 87, part number 56, the bolt that holds the dipstick tube to the block is a 5/16-18 x 1/2". Hope this helps. Butch

    Mystery Tachometer

Pete You have a hybrid/Frankendash. The clock is an option (don't have the option code) for "regular" pickups (C/K10-30). The tach you have is from a C50/C60 series medium duty truck with a 366 or 427 engine with air brakes. On those trucks there was an air pressure gauge where your clock is...

    QJet Questions

Kilian What he said. Using a battery charger as a power supply is pretty much never a good idea, use jumpers from a battery. Battery chargers were not meant to be power supplies and can (have) give confusing/ambiguous results while troubleshooting. As for the choke coil, I would first check...

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

Matt Don't give in to the b@$t@rd$. If you have a knowledgeable q-jet person available I would recommend using them. Q-jets came on 305-454, cars, trucks and land yachts. if you got one from the wrong engine size it could have wrong jets, primary metering rods, secondary metering rods or...

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

DD He's trying to pass CA smog. If its not set at the setting on the smog label (or whatever the spec is for that year) he will get dinged and/or fail. On carbureted vehicles they used to put a timing light on and check it, been 20+ years but I would assume they still do. Butch

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

Testing "hot" (as in drive around for 20-30 minutes) is for a few reasons: - If it has cats, it lets them get up to operating temp (minimum 600 deg F if I recall correctly) so that they're doing their conversion thing and not passing along unburned fuel = high HC on test. - It lets the engine...

    Lifted Dually Suburban wheels/tires?

BearKing I have a 1986 3+3 that I bought in 1988. In 1990 I had a run-in with a drunk that resulted in me having a virtually totaled truck to fix/get back on the road. Both front leaf packs were bent sideways and one rear main leaf was twisted The driver side rear leaf pack exploded and was 10...

    Transmission Identification

Its a TH200. The CY code puts it between about 1976 and 1981. Def a Chev bell housing. Not a boat anchor necessarily. The best bet for this, IMHO, is to look for it a home with a circle track or drag racing group. These are popular with some of them due to the light rotating mass... like a...

    Loss of power and shaking

Mats, (based on my past experiences) with normal start, idle and stop and revving in neutral, sounds like your basic mechanical such as timing chain slipping etc are ok. The idea of putting a vacuum gage on for a test drive is a good recommendation. You just need a non-ported (below the throttle...

Qjet to Edelbrock 1400 vacuum line puzzle- I need help

Fig CL31 is for CA HD emissions with A/C. I believe the figure you had was CL 30 for non A/C trucks. It appears the diff is the addition of a spark control switch. I hope this helps.

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

The cats must be up to temp before they operate (change HC and CO to H2O and CO2) and normal operating temp also ensures the choke is fully open, and a fully warmed up engine does a better job of burning all the fuel it can. A stuck partially closed choke will drive HC up a bunch. You probably...

    Transfer Case Brace

Gil, Way late to this party but I hope it helps. I recall that the bellhousing bolts were always 3/8-16 but not sure now. Maybe they are close enough as to be interchangeable. This is from a Chevrolet parts department catalog from back in the early 90's (when they still used them). I believe...

    transfer case

Bob, (speaking to 1 ton square bodies,) The NP205 transfer case was used up until 1991. Automatic transmissions were THM400 ("Turbo" 400 or Turbo Hydramatic 400) until 1990. 1991 was the first year for the new 4L80E. The trucks were C/K 30 thru 1986. Starting in 1987, the square bodies...

    Lifted Dually Suburban wheels/tires?

Garth/Svein I put 285/75-16s with factory size Alcoa's on my K30 many years ago, way way early 90's. I've put well over 200k miles on this combo before I parked it in 2011. The truck has a 2 1/2" lift and 1 1/2" spacers on the rear. The truck sits flat with no load, it had 3+ yds of gravel in...
