There are not a bunch like a modern car. It is mounted on the upper firewall just right of center on my 87 R10. My truck has a similar relay next to it for kick down on the TH400 transmission- Poppy 87

Welcome Barry, my suspicion is worn pinion bearings. The description of when the noise occurs, coupled with being over a quart low on fluid would point me in the bearing direction. What fluid stains do your daily drivers leave?
My thoughts on this is the cause of those black stripes may be from adrenaline leak making the right foot press heavy on the accelerator pedal. This is a normal condition for car guys- Poppy 87

My 05 silverado daily with 250k has zero leaks, wife's 09 saturn aura with 240k has zero leaks. Ole Bessie my '87 has seepage from the power steering gear box, I have corrected all other leaks during my near 20 years owning her Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk- Poppy 87

Fiberglass hood
I don't have a source for you but pretty sure any fiberglass body parts will require bodywork. I like your idea of aluminum wheels, un-sprung weight is where its at.
