Windshield Woes

Guess I lucked out. No sealant and no leaks.
Someone previous used the black stuff between the seal and the cab. idk if original windshield or not. Not likely but if not, it was in there a LONG time.

I contemplated sealing it but after just test fitting the gasket and a little playing with getting the glass in, it became apparent if I had used that stuff it would have gotten everywhere!!

I've got a shop locally thats gonna install one for me for $250.....and thats with the antenna in it.

My glass shop buddy said that's the only way they're making the Square's windshields anymore

Yeah, the windshields are under $100, they make about $75-$100 to install, and I guess the real expensive thing is the tubes of urethane sealant. My buddy installs them in about 40 minutes.

Randy, did your local glass guru install your windshield with or without sealant, urethane, etc.?

I'm trying to establish whether or not the sealant excuse you got from Precision is justified, or a cop out explanation for when things don't work out as planned.

@scrap--metal , I think cop out personally and I really respect Jeff and his team at precision but the videos they posted said nothing of bonding the gasket to pinch weld and then when it was a river inside that was the answer. It took us I know 4 hours to originally get glass in and I was toast so that’s when we found Mike.

Mike our glass guru, who has been doing glass for over 50 years used a sealant and it’s dry. Also did NOT use a precision gasket said it was inferior to what he knows work. Although he did say his gasket could be a Chinese one, he had history and it worked.
He loaded up the sealer between cab and gasket (not on pinch weld, after glass was installed and before the locking strip) and between glass and gasket after glass was in.

He just did Easton’s vent window that got broken during the freeze a few weeks ago when E pulled on the Handel a little hard.

And he did the entire windshield with the gasket and only charges Easton $80…. I would have paid twice that after all the trouble we had putting it in the first time. There were such large gaps in the precision gasket at the passengers side upper and lower corners and water was literally gushing inside.

Thanks for the clarification, and all the additional details. I agree that the sealant doesn't seem to be a requirement based on the videos available.

I haven't had my K20 in the rain since I replaced the windshield and gasket with my dad last summer, so it hasn't really been tested yet, but the corners all look good and tight. I didn't use any sealant... I'm sure the truck will see some weather and get tested later this year.

So you’re saying your guy peeled back the gasket on the cab side and the window side and put a bead of sealant in each and then wiped all the extra that spooged out after the lock strip was set?
That makes more sense to me. Because there’s no way it wouldn’t have been a huge mess / impossible to put sealant in and then get the window set.

@Grit dog , yes. Had a powered caulking gun and I mean he shot a ton in there. Then used WD40 to clean excess after he set the locking strip which caused a bunch to ooze out everywhere.

@scrap--metal , yes you’re right. I’ll try and dig up the pictures of the gaps we had with the precision gasket. But to be clear we used the one piece gasket with its own sealing strip which seemed half of the problem. We have a two piece gasket now with separate locking strip.
After windshield was set in the gasket had no gaps like our previous one did

Matter of fact when he set new vent window Saturday, he used the same sealant to mount glass in vent frame. No rubber insert strip….

Interesting. I used a gasket with a separate lock strip. Maybe that's why it fit tight?

The hardest part of my install was getting both ends of the lock strip in at the bottom center of the windshield, with the little clip on it. I had to roll around on my hood like a bikini model covered in suds. If I'd have been afraid to do that, I don't think I'd have got that little clip installed.

I would hate to have to replace that one.

You can also check with a local body shop or two, most of those guys use small private glass guys that have been doing it awhile & they’re mobile! That’s who did my windshield & back glass on my 82, he was way cheaper & did it in my driveway.

@scrap--metal , Mike used a locking strip as well, not the self locking one we chose from precision. Very glad it’s sealed and we have moved on to other issues!!
