Look into “Squarebody syndicate” as well as “IDidit” steering columns. They sell a tilt column and the syndicate one is a bit shorter than stock and definitely makes a difference.

Tilt and a smaller wheel will help. Good news is that later c10 wheels are a direct fit and about an inch smaller.

I've been thin and thick in my 78 Scottsdale 4x4 over the years. The tilt wheel did help quite a lot when the belly would push up against it. The only bad thing is the angle of the wheel isn't as pleasing during the drive. BUT...it does give us big boys more room under the wheel with the legs. So ya, I think the tilt is best. The other guys brought up a smaller wheel too. That will get ya more room but isnt the best look in my opinion. I'm a purist when it comes to Chevy wheels....at least in size. A man has to do what he has to do though. Best of luck to you my friend.

Tilt is nice but good luck finding one for a 4 speed auto. No company will get off their butt and make shift conversion kits for the later 3 speed columns, tilt or straight. 4 speed auto shift kits are made for the early columns.

sorry just noticed this.

Can't you just change the internal detent in the column to convert a 3 speed to a 4?
