How do new cars connect to internet ?

I'm curious how all the new cars connect to the internet for the services that are built in to their computers.
Is it cell phone based, or satellite, I find it hard to see satellite as there are no dishes mounted on the roof.
The reason I ask is because (for the next 2 days) I am still stuck with HORRIBLE cell based internet by Verizon, and I lose service often, and guaranteed every weekend when tourist traffic on the interstate picks up.
I will be SO HAPPY on Wednesday afternoon when I get satellite internet installed and I can tell Verizon where to shove their lousy service.

Satellite.
I’m not aware of a vehicle that uses a phone as it’s means of communication.

I have seen those antennas about 3 inches long sticking out from cars, but it's hard for me to believe they can transmit/receive satellite signals.

I don't really know but they could use GPS tracking to keep a running total on miles driven??

If the computer can be re-flashed and the installed wiring could handle it, satellite download might be possible. Even though it may not currently be on the car.

Could be wrong but the gov is getting into everything in our daily lives, they would want to control our cars. If the car can communicate with a cell phone, they can track it by GPS. Some police forces have found criminals using that feature.

Musk is sending up thousands of satellites to cover the earth completely.

Computer chips are the scourge of our lives. 1984 has come true in 2022.

I'm fairly certain it's cellular based. Satellite is still pretty pricey for something as mundane as uploading your tire pressures.

I have heard many stories about cars getting hacked, sabotaged to malfunction, even making stealing them easier.
I'm sure that is thanks to the modern computer age and some way of connecting to the internet.
At least when I have my satellite internet and a herd of tourists drive by the town in their new cars looking at GPS and roadmaps, and the kids in the back seat streaming movies and cartoons, they won't suck up the bandwidth I need for important things.

Just got a notification from good ole GM. Tells me that my 2015 Tahoe will lose the remote door lock and the remote start function, along with the onstar cell phone in December of this year,2022. Reason for this is that the 2G that runs this system is sunsettiing, that means it's going away, NOT to work anymore. WTH? That was one of the perks that we enjoy and partially why we bought the DAMN thing!! Is "good ole" GM gonna reimburse me or try to retrofit something? Haven't heard a word about that!! Sounds like a "class action" suit coming up??

Supposedly, all 3G will be gone by the end of this year.
I thought 2G was already history a while back ...
I'm surprised your 2G onstar and other features are still working.
4G gets overloaded real easy with all the traffic it sees and equipment isn't being upgraded to handle it.
5G won't be available in MANY places for years, if not decades, if the power grid isn't upgraded to handle the demands that 5G will place on it.

From what I understand many new vehicle manufacturers are charging monthly fees for options. Such as heated seats, remote start ect. and it isn't cheap. No pay, no work. Not much of a jump to the car not starting to conserve resources or [guessing] the car tab is expired.

Analog OnStar died a long time ago when cellular networks went digital. So did the analog cell phones. Was there a class action suit requiring them to replace all the obsoleted phones?

Technology changes. Don't expect anyone in the business of selling new products to keep your old ones working. Anybody ever get a GM sponsored HEI retrofit of your breaker point ignition?

NO GM didn't retrofit old point systems to HEI,....BUT they took the HEI out if some and put point systems back in. I personally did at least 2 of them at our Chevy dealership in a couple of of C10 454 rigs. They had MANY problems with the early HEI rigs. On my 2015 Tahoe I am wondering about installing a newer module from a 2017 or whatever in it for a retrofit??
