i install a lot of those in the past and present (ex worker at auto radio store) and never add a issue even today modern 3.5 fit great and sound amazing ;)
It was mainly because the aftermarket dash pad hit the speakers on the factory brackets, so I just eliminated them.

Just stuffed new 3.5s in the dash corners of the '86 yesterday. No fitment problems under the dash (and decent size magnets, 50W RMS rated speakers), but they do sit maybe 1/4" higher up than the OE speakers. Haven't unboxed the new dash pad yet or tried fitting the old one back in.
Any guesses on clearance or warnings that they may not fit under the dash pad?
I've seen people say that they had a similar setup to yours and it pushed up on the dash pad enough to make the corners bulge a touch, so they mounted the speaker on the bottom of the factory bracket instead of on top and it fixed it

Dude, thank you for suggesting this!
Haven't pulled the new dash out of its box yet, but the reason I mentioned it was eyeballing the drivers side one, it sure looked like it would be tight fit.
Appreciate it!

I haven't finished cleaning the dash yet, I think I'll try this before I reinstall it. Mine is toast anyway but no sense in making it worse than it is by having the speakers bulge. Thanks for sharing this.
