External hood release

I have the cable hood release on my 84 and I'm wanting to get rid of the cable to switch to an external release. Any ideas if the 73-80 release will work or any other tips.

You have to change the latch on the hood and the mechanism in the core support. They are different from 73-80 and 81-later, they do not interchange AFAIK

would I be able to just buy a longer cable to reroute it through the fender? I want to hide the cable

Can you get an external release for an '81+ truck? I don't think I've ever seen one.
