Stock manifolds do not hug the side of the head as header flanges do.
I believe there are tapped holes in the heads for mounding stuff like wire looms or heat shields or some other ancillary parts. Those holes are accessible with stock cast iron. The holes in the flanges may permit access to those taped holes in the heads.
Of course, I may be WAY wrong on that.........

Ever watch the Engine Masters video on "dinging" headers to fit? They practically smashed them flat with a sledge hammer without before seeing any difference in performance.

I put a set of Hedman headers off a '79 square body onto my '67 BBC and had to ding the headers a little to fit and the thing still ran like an animal! (Po' boy installation.)

Whatever you do, at least buy a can or two of ceramic paint to help keep the temperatures down somewhat. Un-coated headers super heat the engine compartment with damage to wires and heat soaking the starter. (Lesson learned the hard way.)

As for your direct question, Hedman makes a relatively cheap set as does Flowtech, Jeg's and Summit. All probably will work fine for a mild engine application.Probably all the about same quality (?) Keep in mind with long tube headers it's easier to find a cheap exhaust kit you can install yourself. Shorty headers are a little more difficult to find kits for at the same price point and are often higher priced than long tube headers from what I've seen.

Summit is having a sale on some Flowtechs and price match with free shipping over $99.

Also, I'd pay the most attention to flange thickness when comparing headers, just my 2 cents worth.

You are correct in that there are other brands of similar cost that fit decent and will work. Hooker and Hedman headers have larger primaries (1&5/8) and should flow a little better. But the Hooker version maks plug access a little difficult in a couple cylinders and one cylinder is hard to keep the plug wire away from the header. Hedman actually makes two different sets. One set installs very easy and plug access is good, but they hang low and will interfere with the shackles in a 4x4. The other version tucks up in the frame nicely, but they are harder to install and the left side can interfere with the column shift linkage.

The Flowtech headers are great in this case because of how well they fit, and the little 1.5" primaries won't be too small for a stock motor.

The Jeg's headers are the same as Flowtech.

The Summit headers used to be crappy Dynomax headers, though I'm not sure if that's still the case.

FWIW, I had Flowtech headers on my truck prior to tear down. I had to remove a frame brace (CUCV only I believe)

and the collector on the passenger side was less than a half inch from my double cardon. Perhaps the transfer case sits a little higher on a 1-ton due to frame differences, putting the front drive shaft closer to the collector. I was always thinking it was cooking the grease out of it or if I flexed the front axle just right it would hit...

So you all know, the flowtech headers 11500 I bought ( per Bucket) fit perfect, no beating with hammer, no removing any part of truck, slipped right in place, the easiest headers I have ever put on! I did have to cut my a/c brace.

Graphite type gaskets too? With a few retorques, those should hold up well.

Didn't like the way the A/C bracket was cut ( Per Flowtech ) so redid it with another bracket I had, but my way. I think it looks better !

Hi, old post but did you install both from the top? If not, was lifting the truck necessary? Do you have a pic from underneath, how far should I cut the exhaust to fit the collectors? Thanks!

I'll answer to my self if this helped someone else sometime? Passanger side goes easily from top down, only the oil dipstick is a minor hassle, needs not be removed. Driver side from bottom up, I had to remove cylinder 3. spark plug, nothing else. No lifting the car necessary. All in all quite easy job, only rerouting a starter cable and angled spark plug hats needed.

Yes, but it's my understanding that the quality coating from Jet-Hot is FAR superior to what comes on most coated headers. I have no personal experience with that though.
