Hard accelerator pedal

BTW....My carb was an Edelbrock,too........and there are no bushing kits for the base plate.........

Mines the same way, it's a bugger to push on the gas pedal. I'm guessing my springs are to stiff. Yours look way to big. I have mine doubled up and in the same position as yours. I doubled mine because the carb did stick open on me.

Update: Fixed the vacuum plug. Also unhooked the accelerator cable from the carb, and it moves freely.

It's more like the lever as it pivots is hard. This lever seems to be connected to the accelerator pump? I may be overthinking this and should just be happy that the truck runs well; who cares if the pedal is a bit hard to push right?

Sometimes that cable or the valve it connects to inside the Tranny can get sticky.


If you got a sticking TV cable, you may wanna address that. That's no Bueno for the ol 700's life expectancy

Are you opposed to using lubrication to improve your situation? Metal on metal does not move freely, lubrication is your friend. Most women will confirm that everything moves smoother with lube. That carb linkage has no less than 10 dry pivot points that need lube, that I can see in the picture, not to mention the choke linkage on the other side of the carb. Do not use WD 40, use REAL oil or grease.

I'm not really sure what your trying to say, but there is an obvious crack in your vacuum cap / plug on the carb in the picture, and Mike might be trying to save you from having to chase that down at some point in the near future. If you have already seen that and fixed it you could just say that....
I wasn't being cynical, sorry if it came across that way. I replaced the vacuum cap!

Update: I replaced the vacuum cap, not with tape but a proper cap.

I removed the throttle cable from the linkage and the cable moves easily, so is not the cable housing. I will read more on the springs, although it is hard to move the linkage with the spring disconnected, so I don't think the spring is the issue. I have lubed the linkage but may do it again. Thanks for all the tips!

It is no big deal.....unless you have a 4 speed.....a balky throttle when releasing the clutch makes you look like a noob to stick shift...........

Eddy carb on our truck too. Throttle cable, kickdown cable and cruise all work smoothly, but the pedal pressure required seems excessive. Had dueling return springs, removed one, not much/any difference other than it needed both as throttle would tend to hang a bit with one spring (both were very soft springs and I bought the truck this way).
I had resigned myself to it just being how the carb operates, but once I get the truck roadworthy again, I will 100% try lubing all the pivot points on the carb!

That's ok, the one thing about text vs voice is it's not like we can hear the deflection in voice tone or the look on your face so sometimes assumptions are made that are in correct as was my assumption.

I have to admit that my truck, also edelbrock equipped has a rather stiff throttle pedal. In my case though I actually like it for the most part. So there is that.

NP! It seems that perhaps that is just how the Edelbrock carbs are, stiff. I should just be happy that the truck runs and shifts well and stop looking for nit picky issues.

It does look like your throttle cable has a pretty tight bend between the carb and the firewall.

This^ I had a stiff pedal too. And come to find out it was the bend between the carb and firewall. I straighten it out some by adjusting the cable bracket and it's really smooth now. Hope this helps.

I want to say I had an eddy on an old carb truck I used to have. 350 sbc.
It was sort of stiff in nature, I switched over to a holley in pretty short order, and as I recall, it wasn't as hard to push.

I didn't switch because of the pedal though lol

I switched because I know them a little better.

I fought the same issue with a 73 Chevy Beauville van, it gets hard on the leg and foot muscles on a long drive. It's not nit picky in my opinion.
