Does any know where I can find this trim piece? If you cannot tell what it is, it is trim piece on the rear edge of the hood @ window/cowl. My truck is a Silverado and it came with it from factory. The coating over the silver has turned yellow. I do not know if the silver is plastic or thin aluminium or stainless. I have been looking every where for one. I see plenty for Camaro's, Chevelle's etc, but I do not know if they will be long enough. OR........has anyone successfully restored this piece. If so, please share what you did to get the coating off.

I've got a couple on mine that are crappy and yellow looking. I've never found any nice ones to replace them, they are always baked.

Someone aught to make new ones.

If there was a really good restoration body shop around here that does all the fancy painting (like you see on TV) I would have them paint the "trim" on. Saw it done on a show and it looked damn good. Alas, I live too far from California or Texas to get it done. :(

if it's metal it can be polished and sealed. People have been looking for these forever.

@My78truck,
I'm so glad to see another girl on this forum. I'm always interested in seeing how you go about addressing any things you want to do to or with your truck.
I know any comment on this is late but there seems that the thread fizzled out. What ever became of the hunt for this piece, and yeah I to have seen people looking for it. LMC didn't have a lead on it?
I know there has been another thread on this piece but I can't remember who or when I saw it.

How's the surface finish? Is it smooth or can it be sanded smooth? They make mirror finish chrome vinyl wrap that may work to cover your existing piece.

They are a laminated plastic piece and iirc, the "brightwork" is a thin layer of some type of foil.
same as the side body mouldings on my 'burb? Mine were all yellow and cracked and sh!tty looking. I hit it with the pressure washer to blow off all the old oxidized plastic that turned yellow, left me with only the shiny piece underneath (and a few jagged looking parts around the edges where the plastic "covering" didn't fully blow off because I was in a rush. It's not a permanent fix as the weather is starting to get to that really thin metal strip in there. But boy did it look shiny and bright for a few years. Now that they're looking crappy again I will just replace as that trim is easy to find, whereas the trim you seek is not so readily available unfortunately. But hey if it looks bad now, at least you might get another year or three out of it before it starts to look bad again and at that point you're no worse off than you are now. Will at least buy you some time to track down nicer ones

Yes, similar in construction. But iirc, the shiny layer in the 80's bodyside moldings is thicker than the 70's hood edge moulding.

Hello Raider - I have kinda given up on that right now. No one carries it after a lengthy search through my list of parts suppliers and ebay. Can find them for cars like Camaro's but never long enough. I actually ordered one for a Chevelle. It was made of stainless and very nice but unfortunately too short. Not sure why they continue to make for cars and not our precious trucks. So, the hunt will continue. I actually thought what do I have to loose, so I dipped the en into some acetone and it help take off the yellow coating without hurtinig the rest of it so I may try to continue that when the weather gets warmer and I can do outside. May have to resort to some of the door edge trim if I can find wide enough.

Nice looking '78, I like the bumper guards.
I'll keep my eyes peeled next time I go to the local yard.
The trim on my '75 Scottsdale is all metal, it doesn't have the hood trim though.

I found a trim piece at the local wrecking yard. It's complete but there's a chrome section that is coming loose near the passenger wiper blade base about 1.5" long. I'm superglueing it back down. The rest looks nice, no discoloration or damage.
If you're interested in it, let me know. Can send more photos.
