Bored and Tinkering

My dash lights are real dim, so I figured I would pull the cluster, clean it up, and try this. Also a good time to swap the pos aftermatket radio for an original am/ fm that I have.

After pulling the cluster, I found these purple wires that are jumpered together, can anyone tell me where they go?

Also wondering what this buzzer is for, I've never heard one in this truck.

The truck doesn't appear to have come with a radio, there is no speaker in the dash (holes don't even look like a screw has been in them) and I can't find a wiring harness for one (current radio is wired direct to the fuse panel). Was the radio harness a separate harness?

No idea.... buzzer could be a left your lights on thing and just not working.

I’m rebuilding a Delco radio as we speak. Not modifying for AUX or anything spectacular. Just an overhaul and adding amplifier in behind the tuner.

Thats for the neutral safety switch on the clutch pedal.

My '79 has that buzzer, it's for the seatbelt reminder. It works every once in a while. If my other trucks have it, they must not work.

This raises me a question since you said your rebuilding the radio... my 78 has the stock am/fm radio in it, has anyone had one open and know what size light bulb is in it? Im thinking i may put an led in for now to match all my others.

158 or 194 to luminate the dial

Yellow LED for stereo is a plug in. Switched mine to blue

There is a 158 light bulb that lays horizontal under the tuner dial on the 88 MHz side. I replaced mine with a 194

On the front face plate is a yellow indicator light for when it’s in stereo. That light is a push in LED. I changed mine to blue to match some other things. I also repainted my frequency indicator needle orange

Inside the casing I cleaned all the electronic contacts. Resoldered a couple things and installed new capacitors. Also lubed the screw and sprocket on the tuner side

And of course tuned it in.

That's probably something I should hook back up.

Was thinking about a conversation we had the other day about using aluminum duct tape inside tail light housing to reflect light outwards.

So I decided to line the underside of my inner gauge bezel. Figure it can’t hurt. Why not see if it will improve illumination.
