At my place, when you you loose a clip or a bolt, it's just gone, never to be seen again, because all my stuff is out in a field with tall grass. Your lucky.

Chevrolet service manual says always use a new one on reassembly. I didn't. Works fine.

No!! Don't drive with vise grips! That is the ultimate red neck. I can see putting a pair of vise grips on the window crank, but not to steer. Could you do it? Yeah, but that's all it would take is some sudden thing happen in front of you and that would be it. And can you imagine what the cop would say when he sees vise grips on the steering shaft?

Use a new one?? The one I'm using was the one put in there in 1973, are you kiddin'!

Suggestion for a tool to use when trolling for lost bolts and springs -

If you have any old desktop computers parts around, you probably have a disk drive from when a 50 gbyte drive was really big. Strip that drive down and remove the magnets that are inside. They are very strong for their size, and already have a couple of holes drilled in them, and I have attached one to a fairly long piece of perforated metal strapping. Using that “tool” I can drag the magnet(s) up and down the driveway or through the grass and it will pick up screws, bolts, etc. that have blended in with the driveway. It also works pretty well as a general purpose magnetic pickup tool when you drop something into a crevice in the engine compartment.

are you talking an old IDE 3._ inch drive?

I wonder if all HDD of the same size dont have similar/equivalent magnets
I have like 10-15 hard drives, laptops to the old ones you mentioned. I should get up-cycling

Microwaves.
I did same thing with microwaves. If you rip them apart, there are 2 huge magnets inside, that are great for finding lost things.
I went to a friend's scrap pile and tore apart about 10-15 microwaves, got a whole stack of magnets, them I made a frame to hang off the bottom of an old radio flyer wagon, and hung them all from that. Now I just pull the wagon around and pickup all the nails and screws, and lost parts i want.

THAT'S RIGHT!! I found the same thing out when I took a old HDD apart, the old 3"x5" size, just to see what was inside. Man, those little suckers are super strong. Don't lay them down on a flat piece of metal. I hope you've got strong fingers 'cause you're going to need them to lift those things off. @AuroraGirl, Yes. Those magnets are what laid the data onto the platter's that are inside, well, and other electronic stuff in there to. There are disc shaped platters inside. The higher the gigabit capacity the more platters are in them. The platters spin between those magnets, and I have no idea how they work. That's all I was able to guess at just looking at the parts inside.

When I worked for the airlines we had some scrap instruments, one being a "artificial horizon" That thing had a big magnet in it. I use it to find screws, and whatever else I've dropped outside the shop. Mostly looking for nails and bits and pieces of metal. I also use it to magnetize screw driver tips. It's great for that because it's a "horse shoe" shaped magnet. Just drag the tip over the ends of the horse shoe and you won't be dropping screws anymore when you are having to put a screw into a place you have to reach for.

Hey, you know nowadays there's these things that have a gasoline engine on top of this platform thing and attached to the engines drive shaft is a blade that's shapened on both ends. When you start the engine the blade spins real fast and it's real good for cutting grass. I think they're called "lawn mowers"!

Yeah, I think I've heard of them in one of them there fancy magazine things, Haha.

I have a lawnmower, it's a 1968 Randomes 48in walk behind self propelled.
Runs great, I rebuilt the crab and the transmission. Thing is straight out of a horror movie, but its doesn the job.
2 problems with the the whole "cutting grass" thing, I have 70 acres of grass, and I dont have a weed wacker. Most of my tall grass issues occur under the vehical where the mower won't reach. And usually if i am working on a car, its because it doesn't run or drive, haha.

All mechanical hard drives have magnets. At work we strip them before tossing them. Can never have enough magnets

Good advice. That's how I ended up with an ugly kid.

Any suggestions on the part number for this retaining clip? I tried my local napa and they looked at me like I was stupid. I don't see it listed in the LMC parts diagrams either.

you talking abotu the one that you push down the plate with the tool that threads onto the column center, i think, then the two tangs push the plate down, then that groove where the clip then you remove and then your plate comes off ? or am I not remembering the anatomy right lol
