Yeah- I had to chain up the front of the truck as the roads getting up there were a sheet of wet ice. The road also had a large drop off on the one side so there was no room for error. Those chains don't fit my current size tire anymore. Too bad- as they were the heaviest chains I could find. Local loggers like to run them even in mud.

Driving to La. one year we stopped to climb this hill way out on the Arizona, New Mexico border. There were those big Seguaro cactus's and barrel cactus's, everything. I wish I could remember what the place was called. It was where the guy and his girlfriend I was with, had been there before and was right off I-10 highway. It was pure desert for sure but it wasn't like being out in it. But I still love the desert. I imagine with proper preparation, like you're talking about having the perfect deep desert Chevy, a vehicle that can make it no matter what, the desert would be a lot of fun and beauty.

I'm sure me talking about the desert coming from a Louisiana swamp boy I'm out of my element. But unless you've grown up in the swamp, the swamp sucks. Everything there wants to eat you from mosquito's as big as a bird, to the alligator's, poisonous plants, water moccasin's, quick sand, and if you turn around twice your lost. Forget that. I'll stay in town, thank you very much.

Yes , 8 foot drop off on the right side so the only way around was to side hill it. Creek in the bottom, (super soft) and up hill as well. Went down it to get to some old mines but it was a bitch to get back out, (one way in and one way out), and all that was with me was utv's.

It's hard to tell all the angles involved in a pic, but it was a bitch to get out, that's why you need a winch

One of my favorites is the DIY4x bumper. I'll be making my own version once I get a garage. (Not my truck)

Man, that looks really good. Do you get much illumination from those LED's, I assume they're LED's, packs of those little lights. And a bar in the middle. I missed that at first, but then figured it must be one of those bars. I know those things a really bright. Where does the winch come out there? All you guys with these bad ass trucks!

That looks good. How thick is that plate? I've heard that if you can hang your truck off of it it's strong enough. Either way it looks tough.

Maybe you could get a set of semi tractor chains and mod them to fit your current tires. Just an idea. Those tires a big on those trucks and maybe they would work.

So in the pic of you and all the utv's, what was your cable attached to, a rock? I don't see any trees nearby. Yeah, you sure couldn't use any of them to help pull you out, unless all of them hooked together and pulled on you. Your front bumper setup looks like @TubeTruck 's. photo of his. Can you attach anything onto the tubes of that bumper if you had to? I was just wondering how sturdy it was.

My bumper I made myself, but I had a machine shop bend the tube's and then I shaped them a bit and welded them on. they are .250 wall, so they are beefy, but I would not winch off of them, I have the d-rings for that. There was two tree's to winch to about 90 feet away.

I wish it were mine. One day I will have something like that though. Here's the bumper center section. It's made from 1/4" plate. They have a welded version and an unwelded that you can put together yourself. They used to have the tubing prebent also but I didn't see it and didn't look to hard. It might be under a drop down menu.

Well- I got my ORD bumper and now it doesn't bolt on. The bumper itself has 4 holes drilled into it per side:



However the frame only has 3 holes. And out of all those holes in the frame and the bumper only ONE will line up. And that is the larger slotted hole in the frame for the tow hook.

I mean sure- I can go and start drilling holes but why? Why doesn't it just fit?

I called them and they said no drilling is necessary. I emailed them pictures but haven't heard anything back yet.

I think I'd rather drill in the bumper then the frame. I think the frame is weaker and thinner than the bumper itself.

EDIT: ORD said there are different bolt patterns for the bumpers and they went with the most common. Guess that is '81-'91? Definitely not mine. They said just drill out the frame or the bumper and make it work. Wish they didn't drill any holes at all- would have been better to just start "fresh".

Also I found interesting that the bracket on the drivers side that holds the spring perch to the truck was ripped. (near the radiator support body mount). Had to clean the bracket, drill a hole at the end of the crack and then weld it. Crack was probably 1.5" long.

Here's mine. It came in my rig but would be easy to duplicate. I cut off the grill guard part. Love having a place to stand on the bumper.

They still sell it as far as I know. Once you are on the bumper page (they show the full coverage bumper) but once you start to fill out bumper options below: 73-87(91) years then there is the option for full coverage or the low profile bumper. Low profile is $100 less.
