Why would this ever be manufactured for any reason? It's like it's born to slip.

Notched belts can use the same pulleys as cross-section standard V-belts. They run cooler, last longer, and are about 2% more efficient than standard V-belts. ... 2 In contrast, V-belts have a sharp reduction in efficiency at high torque due to increased slippage.

Notched belts seen to work better on my ag stuff like lawn mowers. I think the concept is like tire tread, drag slicks have more contact yes but only on good pavenent, throw some dirt or snow in the mix and you'll need tread unless you like to whip shitties everywhere (that's valid too)

I have come across certain pulleys that a cogged belt would be worse to slip.Usually I would lock it down and let it run a few minutes,and after belt breaks in and strectches even a bit more,do the process over again.Let 'em run in and heat up and adjust works for me.I find all v belts kinda work like this.

I tried that for 500 miles. I adjusted it multiple times, then I gave up. The belt seemed clean too when I pulled it. I guess I just got a bad one.

I just replaced the alternator on my truck,the rebuilt unit whined and I had to get my belt pretty tight or it'd squeal.It was a pain.Replaced the unit for a good one and the belt isnt nearly as tight and it doesnt slip.The pulley is different on the replacement unit.A better v shape on it

That could be a possibility. The bearing felt smooth though, and it puts out 14 volts.

@motohunter4,

Just make sure your pulley groove isn't painted, or any rust in the groove. If so take a wire brush on a drill and get it clean. If there is anything in the pulley groove it will have the tendency to slip. I've used all kinds of belts both solid and cogged and as long as the accessory is tightened properly and the groove is clean it shouldn't slip. No paint! And you are right, if the belt is slipping but you don't hear any noise it could be slipping causing the voltage to go down some.

Even if a belt looks like it’s running true,it may be off slightly causing squeals.A solid belt works better when things are slightly off because of the side contact area.Or at least it sounds good to me.Make the squealing stop.It makes me cringe almost as bad as a nagging 4 letter word

Notched belts have always worked for me, but I've also always bought the higher end belts, of various brands.

I believe the notches should also make for a quieter running belt. Probably a little less parasitic loss due to better flexibility too.

A bar of soap on a squeaky belt often does the trick.

having not read this thread thru n thru....your comment grabbed my eye.

The guys at Autozone hooked me up with the more expensive belt because they didn't have any of the cheap ones in stock....for the same price as the cheaper one. Helps to be a regular sometimes :)
