emissions help?

Long story short is I found out I can get a emissions waiver if I spend 200.00 at a certified garage. Turns out one of my long time friends from high school shop is on the list. Made an appointment for the 11th. I pulled the plug off the cts sensor and the motor idled up, pulled the plug from the map sensor and it died. Map sensor at my local napa was 139.00. It was a no brainer to take it to my buddies, either way I win. Will keep you posted on the official outcome.

Yeah, if you unplug the cts, it goes to base settings, and floods the motor with gas, if you do it to the map, same result.

Its a gimmicky way to get home if the fuel pump is dying, unplug the map, and the injectors go into overdrive.

Have you tried retarding the timing just for the test. Retarded timing makes the exhaust, the converter and the O2 sensor run hotter.Keeps it in closed loop for sure. That's the reason for ported vacuum advance on emissions equipped carbed cars the timing gets retarded at idle due to loss of vacuum advance causing combustion later in the cycle.

I should have read everything before posting, now I am editing. Does it idle too fast? If you have a vacuum leak or manifold leak the O2 sensor is going to sense a lean condition and add fuel.If the timings advanced that's going to increase idle but also affect emissions at Idle. Is it hot enough for the O2 sensor to work when you are getting it tested.Does the O2 sensor work ?

Thanx for the input. It is going to be my reccomendation at the shop to replace all 3 of the sensors and give it a whirl. I really do not think it idles all that high, a tach is in my near future. The truck really runs great and strong except for the rich idle, you can smell it it's so rich.

So the mechanic called today, and all is well. I have not seen the particulars yet but the short story is my rig did throw " check engine light ". Mechanic was able to recover codes. New map sensor, new 02 sensor, and the cts sensor I bought last year was also out of whack. I think he adjusted the idle, and he said he set the timing?? This puzzled me... I thought the tbi was self timing as long as you were close to TDC #1? Is there a timing adjustment to be made? Or did he just check it?

Anyway he says the emmisions are good to go and it runs like new. Total bill IMHO was cheap. Total parts and labor 380.00 Guy is a magician IMHO.

Question? Is it o.k to tip the pro for job well done? I feel like he really got into it and the outcome was great. Was thinking 1 cool ben franklin to him directly, not the shop. What say you guys?

Go for it.
When I was a service guy, it always made my day to get any kind of tip.

We are doing this dance with my 1995 Suburban right now.
All the sensors have finally been changed and we will try it again for the forth time.
Luckily I don't have to pay to have it tested.

If you can have him check the emissions level before and after the cat, then calcualate the % of reduction. That way you can tell if the catalyst is in good shape or not.

Timing is set at 0° on stock with the bypass thingy unplugged.

The ecm adds 10° when plugged back in, and from there advances based off TPS.

So the timing could be advanced to much? He may have retarded it to get the 10 degree advance in the right spot?

You have to time.But in service mode so the computer has the baseline. Once out of service mode the ECM takes it from there.

So my brain never received any of this information during " operation motor swap ". Oh well, I am now smarter. The mechanic went back through everything from the beginning. He cleared all of the codes and verified correct operation of all sensors. The glaring exception was the o2 sensor, he said it was F'd, and replaced. So the fix was a new o2 sensor and setting the timing correctly and the idle speed.

Drove it home like I stole it and Oh Baby she is smoooth and fast. Heading back to the inspection tomorrow after work if I am lucky.

I offered the ben franklin as tip for working on and fixing my junk to the mechanic, he smiled and said he would not take it. He said he enjoyed working on my stuff and to bring it back anytime. Holy smokes batman! What a class act guy!
