292 I6 Restart Trouble

I'm having trouble running after restarting my 292 (one-barrel), in my all-stock '81 C20 with an SM465. I drive it the store (5 miles), park it, then get back in and restart it and it doesn't want to idle. I have to really goad it with the gas pedal or it dies. Once I'm rolling again it gets okay. I'm thinking maybe too much heat around the carb. And, I've seen some people use heat shields under carb on other inline engines. I also thought about poor venting and have pulled the gas cap before re-start but that didn't help. Has anyone had this problem and fixed it? Thanks

Sounds to me like classic carburetor heat soak. I've heard you can solve it by adding carb spacers or adding a return/recirculation gas line to the tank. My 250 used to do that on the old monojet, and I would just kinda floor it while cranking and it seemed to help. Since I've gone to an Edelbrock 4 bbl I haven't had that problem though, not sure why; possibly because I added a 1" spacer to get the air cleaner over the valve cover.

X2. Add a spacer.

Mine is awful. You can hear it percolating after it is off when it is 100 degrees here. I have some interesting heat shields to put on mine, but haven't done it yet. I think they were from an '80.

Thanks for the replies. I'm gonna see if I can rig up some heat shielding and/or spacers. The problem is reduced on cooler days.
