harmonic balancer

my harmonic balancer needs to be replaced . i went to pull one off a used engine and it is a couple of inches smaller diameter can i use it in place of the 8.5 inch one. thanks

keith there are 2 common reasons harmonic balancers need replacing > one is the oil seal will wear a grove and then you get a oil leak . this is why mine needs to be replaced"" #2 reason is the rubber that holds the balancer together will start to deteriorat

Speedi sleeve and a new seal=less money if the rest of the balancer is ok??

mine looks a little funny, but im not replacing it because of it. i cleaned the engine so if its leaking oil i can see. too many things leaked oil like intake, ps, valve covers, coolant, me filling fluids and spilling, water, dirt, me spraying fluids, hoses popping off, etc. so i figured clean slate would be much more reliable

All traditional small block Chevy V8s except for the 400 use a neutral balanced harmonic balancer. The 400's harmonic balancer has a counterweight built in it.

Common engine building practice (including the factory's) for all non-400 applications is to balance the harmonic balancer to neutral balance by itself. That way all balancers are interchangeable without further balancing work.

When you buy a factory balancer or a decent aftermarket one it is already neutral balanced.

+++NOTE+++ unless the balancer has been changed before, and is still the factory balancer, the larger diameter balancers were typically used on 4-bolt main engines so there's a potential "plus" for you..
