I have a broken cable on my shift indicator for my Jimmy. does anyone know if the cable can be repaired with fishing string or something or know if the cable can be purchased separately without changing out the whole indicator?

thank you

No idea about the purchased separately, but jury rigs are doable , and have been done before. :D

so, yes, to the fishing string.

Classic Parts of America had them in the old catalog, but I checked and now they show unavailable. The cable is actually plastic coated wire. A craft or hobby shop should have it.

LMC has the whole thing for $30. That is what I used a couple of years ago.

Can also get a picture hanging kit that has small cable wire in it to use. Can get at hardware or hobby store.

I used this but now the wire is just mild steel bendy wire so used fishing wire.

John Ward how did you attach the wire to the metal clip? did you just crimp it in there? im thinking of trying the same but the parts to crimp are shot on mine. might end up just buying a new one unless can get it to attach somehow to the clip

I had a broken wire as . I thought about super gluing it back together then soldering it but finally bought a new one on ebay for $40. I also bought another one for a spare. I found out too that when you reassemble it in the dash, use lots of lube or it will hang up.
Mine is for a 1975 K20, don't know if other years are different. Here is the GM p/n if you're interested. AC 25016378 Good luck. I bought a new one because I din't want a patched one failing in a few months, that's the way things go for me.

I have heard of using fishing line to replace the indicator cable, and I've heard of using picture hanging cable. If it were me and I had to rig something up I'd use the cable from the picture hanging kit because depending on the weight of fishing line and the summer temps I could see fishing line possibly stretching in time. I don't fish so I could be way off on that, it's just that it is plastic line.

But honestly for a mere $30 I can't see any reason other than the time it would take to get to you, not to order the proper unit from LMC. And this is coming from a tight *** who always tried to save a buck. But I think the $30 would be well spent.

I should add that I have see vehicles come into the shop with crimp on electrical connectors holding the indicator cable together, not sure I would go that route though, I'm just saying I've seen it done.
