I checked and those chrome strips along the roof are secured with some solid torx screws. I remember when I had the headliner out I could see them coming through.

I also took a picture of that hole in the roof I was talking about. Anybody know what this is for? When I had the rear headliner out I sealed it up real good with silicone, it had a small leak as was evident in the headliner. Certainly looked like a factory plug to me, but I could be wrong since I'm not sure what it would be used for. Hard to tell from the picture, but this is located toward the rear, forward of the ac unit, about in the middle of the rear headliner.

That's not a factory hole. Someone did that to it.

adamj did you end up getting that custom rack you talked about? I have the same factory rack on my '88 burb and was looking to what you discussed earlier in this post.

I have not, I've been getting around with a roof-top box (thule-type deal) mounted to the factory rails. I'm still on the lookout, but haven't really needed it, or just made do without.

It's an aluminum rack of unknown manufacture. Got it for $100 from a guy that was parting out his burb and I think I'm the third or fourth owner of it. The basket has four cross bars as a base and they fit within the two crossbars of the factory rack. You might have noticed that your factory crossbars have a slight upward arch to them. This didn't interfere with mounting the basket, I just shoved it forward until the basket's forward crossbar was next to the factory crossbar. You can kind of see what I'm talking about in this pic.

If you're looking for a really stout basket, look for a Con-Ferr rack. Steel construction and built like a tank. You can spot a Con-Ferr by the round holes on the sides. Expect to pay a premium if you can find one.

The Con-Ferr rack is 7' x 5'w x 6.25"h. Material for the frame is .75" square tube steel with expanded mesh steel for the floor.

For comparison, the rack I have is also 7', but 10"narrower at 50". His hangs out to about where the door drip rails are while mine is tucked in above the flat portion of the roof. This pic is the best I could find showing the difference.
