Home built wood engine stand?

Have any of you guys built a wood engine stand?
Does anybody have engine dimensions?
I think I just need the width of the oil pan and the dimension of the height difference between the high and low point of the oil pan.

Any ideas?

If you're trying to build a sbc engine stand, it'll be probably be fine. I'd do it.

If it's a bbc.... Better be out of a 6x6s.

I have cad data for the sbc/bbc bellhousing pattern if you can use it

Edit: kinda kidding on the big block comment with 6x6's.
But they can be pretty heavy as the cubic inches go up.

If not mistaken the common sbc would be about 800lbs correct?

I have accouple of "stands" made out of goodwrench engine pallet(crates) and they do run both sides of the pan rails. I added some old metal wheels I had laying around and they work pretty good on the concrete floors in my shop. I'll try to get measurements and pics tomorrow

that's a little hi closer to 5-600#

I thought that was big block weight

I can't remember what the paper said my 502 weighed in the crate, but I wanna say it was 8-900

A full trim BBC weighs 650-700#. That's with cast heads, cast intake, manifolds, carb, fuel pump. A full trim SBC weighs about 500-550#

We had a low boy one. It was made like a box around the oil pan. It had a furniture dolly type feel to it. We used it to just push it around the garage. It was made all from 2x8.

but the pallet is cool too. Sheet it with some OSB then block it up with the 2x8 or any size that’s taller than the pan is deep and plop it in there.

also needed gussets. just triangular cut 2x8s along the outside of the box. ( I’m sure you knew that)

This is right. I looked up BBC weight just last week or so when I bought chains to lift mine into the truck. Had 1000 lb chains that e irked great.

This is a pic of the "crate motor pallets. I just added some smaller wheels I had laying around and made it mobile. Really pretty sturdy for rolling around the shop and also hyster friendly.

is that about 9.5” between the 2x8s?

This is all 1 bys and 2x4 construction. Distance between the uprights is 8 1/2 inches, the length front to rear of support is 21 1/2 inches. The height from the 2nd tier to the pan rail rest is 7 inches. Total outside footprint is 24" wide by 28 1/2" long. These that I have made are what a Goodwrench SBC came on one from Appleway Chev in Spokane and one from Jegs. The metal tabs on either ends were bolted to the respective ends of the blocks. I believe the 1st pic is the rear and the rear of the block rests on the crosspiece. Glad to answer any other questions. I used old creeper wheels on one end and that doesn't work real good, need better clearances. This is a good base, just need to find your own wheels for mobility.
