So I decided to change the thermostat and housing today. I popped the hose to find a surprise. Can someone tell me what is going on with my cooling system?

If its localized to the thermostat. I would say its a combination of weak coolant and a cheep pot metal thermostat housing.

I'd just run some radiator flush through it. It should clean all that junk outta there.

When I ran radiator flush through mine, there was so much loosened crud that the radiator started to leak. That crud was sealing corroded holes in the radiator core.

It cost me $500 to have the radiator rebuilt at a local shop, but it has a brand new core, new hose neck, and fresh paint.
