Carpet: pre made kit or ??

Thinking about putting carpet in the truck to make the interior a bit more comfortable. I know there are pre made kits out there, but what are my other options? I don’t want to spend a ton of money, but I do want to cover the entire floor and have it look good. Is there some place that sells carpet by the foot?

The premade carpet kits are cut and molded to fit the floor, and they include a grommet for the floor dimmer switch, so they are easier to install. You could just buy bulk automobile carpet and use the old carpet for a template, but it might take quite a while to get it to mold into the shape of the floor.

The pre made, molded carpet is the way to go in my opinion. I still had to trim and it took a while to work out the folds and wrinkles from the box. It definitely looks factory though.

around here any carpet place has some like auto carpet they sell by the yard or whatever. It works just not a nice laying or looking. I've bought rolls from autozone or walmart for like 8 each and they are enough to do the front section only in front of the seats to the firewall door to door. I've got it in dads 84 now and had it in his 86

I'll have to dig around to see if I can find any pictures of it. However I haven't been able to find those rolls in awhile at least not walmart autozone may still have it. I avoid that place as much as possible.

I just ordered my carpet from RockAuto. They are ACC Carpets and are drop shipped from the factory. With the discount offered here I got them for $136.68 delivered.

That’s what I was thinking about, just generic rolls of carpet for cheap. That way if it ends up ratty and muddy I can just toss it and put some more in. Right now I just have vinyl in front of the seat and nothing underneath. I was thinking about doing carpet on top of the vinyl, and then under the seats as well to hopefully get the cab a little quieter. Doesn’t seem like getting to lay flat would be too hard, but I could be wrong.

that's how ours is you can glue it down or even heat gun to help it lay flatter.

Definitely get the molded carpet kit, some trimming and fitting is needed and they come with attached pad and sound deadening. Color match is usually very good, It’s an even better fit if you add sound deadening and heat shield. You’ll get a much better result than trying to fit your own Carpet!

Wow, that interior looks smick!

Well... I would suggest a good molded carpet. But, when I was 16 and replaced the carpet in my Blazer I went to the local carpet/flooring store and asked for what scrap they had to sell. I bought 2 pieces w/ floor padding, 6'x7' for 10.00. I would imagine that would be 40.00 today. But I cut it with small overlaps and it certainly quieted down the truck. It wasn't perfect but it did fit very well.

I use the molded kits. Good quality ones. Just unpack them, let them sit in the sun for a few hours to warm up and drop them in. They are not very expensive and you save a lot of time which you can use to drink beer with your friends at your garage

If you get a pre-made molded carpet, make sure it goes under the seat and covers the entire cab floor. Also, I have found on a couple old vehicles that molded carpet rarely conforms perfectly to the transmission hump. Of course the only fix for that is "cut and sewn" carpet, and that may not even be available for our trucks. So use this forum to find out which vendors sell molded carpets that fit.

Also, I'd spend some time installing sound deadening material and heat insulation on the floor. Even a few squares here and there will dampen vibrations and reduce cab noise. On top of that add some foil-backed heat insulation in lieu of the felt pad that comes with the carpet.

I put both of the products below on my truck under a vinyl floor mat. The interior is now very quiet, even though I haven't put sound deadening in the doors yet.

I used something similar when I put the interior back in. It goes all the way under the seat, but the vinyl flooring doesn’t. Now I’m leaning towards a pre made kit. If I’m going to do it I might as well do it right. I still need to put out some sound deadening in the doors.
