hello all. was wondering what the average cost for a machine shop to do a 355 short block. I have a good 350 block and crank. no pistons, rods ect. just trying to get an idea of a general price range. I have the rest of the stuff for the motor that I will assemble. thank you

Well you have a crank... I would still get a full stroker 383 kit including higher compression forged pistons.

If your crank needs grinding it will only cost a little more in the long run.
Of course there will be a little more prep on the block, some clearance issues to deal with.

And... what about the heads? You have heads? Sounds like you don't... if you need heads and are not in a hurry, I would be shopping for used or new never used aftermarket heads.

Consider aftermarket cast iron Vortec style heads..
Used factory Vortec heads are thin and prone to cracking so you'll want your machine shop to carefully check them out.

As for rebuild prices I can't help you there. I live on another planet. So sorry I can't answer your question, just thought I would toss out some things for you to consider.

What do you REALLY want to do?
How fast do you want to go?
How quick do you want to get there?
How big a load are you going to pull?
Do you give a hoot about gas mileage?
How much are you willing/able to spend?

When YOU can answer those questions for yourself then we can begin.

Geez....... Have a stock 350 .030 over, self ported 194 heads, 9.84 to 1 compression (measured), Dyno 327 hp, (engine.) Silverlite hypereutectic pistons, 500 lift 284 duration cam, (to much overlap, but excellent 4500 up rpm.) cost me less than 2500.00. polished the crank, .0024 clearance on rods, everything done to the rods, most important!!!!!! balanced and is a pleasure to take down the road. Great sounding motor. Weiand stealth manifold, stock HEI ignition, Tall aluminum manifolds. Everybody gets there two cents in right, for what it's worth. Smoke em' if you got em'.
