Here's what GM says:

RADIO

C-K Models

Replacement (Fig. 2)
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

2. Pull off radio control knobs and remove knob
bezels. Remove the nuts and washers from the
control shafts using a deep well socket.

3. AM Radio-Remove the radio support bracket stud
nut and lockwasher.

AM/FM Radio-Remove the radio support bracket to
instrument panel screws.

4. Lift up on the rear edge of the radio. Then push
the radio forward until the control shafts clear the
instrument panel. Lower the control far enough to
disconnect the electrical harness.

5. Disconnect the power feed, speaker and antenna
lead wires and remove the radio.

6. To install, reverse Steps 1-5 above.

BUT it don't work that way.

Is cassette radio to big???

What is it out of ?

If a truck, seems like it would fit.

My Chilton's agrees with what you have.

I got it from one of the guys here. Supposed to be from an 80 something truck.

No cassette available in 73. I think the radio is too big.

Measure width of the on/off and channel selector shafts compared to the OE radio and if same it possibly will fit.

It should. They made the tuner a good bit smaller than the old AM unit to accommodate cassette, 8 track, or CB configs. Plus, they all share the same basic bezel, right? The new radios came around in ‘77, and fit right in. Sorry I don’t know round eyes as well, but I thought shaft radio dimensions were the same from the 60s to 1988 in the trucks.

The shaft spacing changed at some point. My '69 and '70 Impalas have a wider spacing than the mid-late 70's GM vehicles.

Sorry for confusion.

It IS a stock radio.

Shaft distances are correct because it is a stock radio.

It is a stock radio from an 80's truck.

BUT,

I can't feed it up to it's proper location.

I have an AM/FM Cassette from an '84 Caprice in my '78 C20, if that is any help. Perfect fit, but the back brace was missing.

I just had my OEM radio in and out to set up my Retro Sound unit. I had to turn it sideways as it passed under the bottom lip of the dash.

I used a stock radio out of an 84 gmc in my 78 Chevrolet for a short while. It was a tight fit, but that was more because of the way my aftermarket ac was installed. So it should definitely fit as long as it is for sure out of a pickup.

My friend came over and 2 minutes later it was in.

Go figure.

Back brace is a different story.
