i have new crate 350 motor, that had rebuilt quadrajet, and hated it, so bought edelbrock 1400, with elect choke, 1st of all i have 2 extra emission hoses that used to hook to quadrajet, egr tvs, efe tvs ? 2nd, truck starts but dies, also backfires, edelbrock said fuel regulator, got that and it helped a little, it now stays running so i can time it, well the timing i had to turn alot counter clockwise, and still needs more, if i do this, it wants to die again ? it has new gas tank, and gas been in it for few months ? tried to drive it but when i tried to go up the drive way it would die, then backfire and spit again ? all input at this time would be helpful. thx

What do you have the timing set to? Is that with the vacuum advance disconnected?

You need to start out by using a timing light to verify and set base timing to about 8-12 degrees BTDC with the vacuum advance disconnected. Then rev up the engine and verify that the centrifugal advance works, and timing increases with RPM.

Once base timing is correct, set the idle speed to about 800 RPM in Park. Then reconnect the vacuum advance, preferably to the full manifold vacuum port. You may then have to set the idle down a little, since full vacuum should increase the idle.

All the emissions hose should have a place to connect on the new carburetor, but I don't know if they would use ported or manifold vacuum.

If all this works, come back with the results and further questions.

You can always get a fitting for the size of vac hoses that threads into the intake manifold's vac passages. Kind of along the lines of this but for your specific application of course. I would also be checking your timing with a timing light to verify its spot on. Also is the Harmonic balancer in good shape and the timing tab lining up properly?

HERMONIC BALANCER IS GOOD AS FAR AS I CAN SEE, AND TIMING TAB IS OK ALSO, I TURNED IT CLOCK WISE AS POSSIBLE UNTIL IT WANTS TO DIE, AT THIS POINT THE TIMING MARK IS STILL NOT READING ON TAB YET IT NEEDS I BIT MORE.
LET ME BACK UP A BIT, I WENT ON A ROAD TRIP WHEN QUADRAJET WAS ON NEW MOTOR TRIP WAS ABOUT 600 MILES, WELL SPENT OVER 300 IN GAS, SEEMED LIKE EVERY 60 MILES HAD TO FILL UP ? AND IDLE STAYED HIGH ? IT FOULED PLUGS TOO ? SO IM THINKING THE SHOP THAT INSTALLED MOTOR PUT DIST. IN WRONG, PLUS WHATEVER ELSE IM FINDING OUT, IF MY BOSS DIDNT FUND THE MOTOR ID BE ON THIS SHOP, WHICH I WILL BE WHEN I FIGURE THIS OUT.
HOPEFULLY THIS HELPS WITH DIAGNOSIS, IT HAS NEVER REALLY RAN GREAT, NEVER HAS DONE BURNOUTS, AND I FIG WITH NEW MOTOR, CARB, EXHAUST etc. ID AT LEAST MAKE SOME NOISE FROM TIRES ? NOPE.
SO IF NEED TO PULL OUT DIST, HOW IS THE BEST TECHNIQUE, AND WHICH WAY WOULD I ROTATE IT TO ? THANKS

ditto on the distributor not right. you dont say which one you have? HEI?

also, there are better intake manifolds to run on a stock engine, like all the other ones are better.

oops , just saw the additional post you made. 600 miles on that problem? you better do a tear down. rings are washed and probable more damage. 60 miles on 30 gallons? dude. !
