My replacement hood is rusted out and needs to be replaced. What was the factory color for the bottom of the hood and was the insulation standard or an option?

Insulation was tied to other trim level content (like Silverado, for example).

Underside of hood was primer colored (black in later years) with body colored overspray around the edges.

You may be right, Keith, but I don't remember any of the originals on my squares being any other color than the rest of the truck. My 1979 is Dark Carmine as the rest of the truck.

There's going to be some variation from plant to plant (and operator to operator) but full coverage on the underside was not required.

I have a pic of mine but the photo is all fuzzy because it is hosted on photobucket.

I agree with Keith and I think it's best to have some paint over the primer to seal it then, insulation.

Thanks everybody, I found an excellent original hood with the black primer so I told my paint guy to go with black epoxy primer and insulation over it. The hood still had all of the clips with the part number on each one and the holes for an emblem! Yahoo.

Talking about hood insulation. If you use Quit Rides insulation (some hard plastic over softer small parts), dont get ANY brake fluid on black plastic. It will just fall apart after a couple of days. some kind of chemical reaction. Quit Ride was fair and send me a new one.

Agree with what the rest mentioned. Mine are black with the body color on the edges. It saves paint and if you have the pad you will never see underside.
