Most manufacturers don't make a step for the square body because the frame rail is inside tanks and the tanks get in the way of the brackets they use. Newer trucks have a frame rail outside the tank and its easy to bolt a step bracket on. I've often considered whether we could build a long/deep custom bracket that would attach to the frame and extend out under the tanks to provide support for a step.

I installed hoop steps on my '75 many years ago, and despite being only bolted to the rocker panel they are still holding up well. However, there isn't much space between the gas tank and the rocker, so the rear brackets are a PIA to install. They also got in the way and had to be removed before I could drop the gas tank to replace the sending unit.

A lot of the steps designed for the newer trucks bolt only to the body mount also. Eliminates the need to drill into the rockers and creat another hole for corrosion to get a foothold in.

The CARR step, which bolts to the rocker and is centered with the front edge of the seat, is a good deal forward of my gas tank which is under the long bed and behind the cab. This is the way I think I will go as I'm not quite sold on running boards, yet. If the step doesn't work well, I can always change to something else.
Thanks again for all of the interest and comments.

My suburban has steps that go to the frame. Mounts are long and have small triagulating bars and tie together between each other(side to side). But for your situation I think a set of running boards might be a better fit.

Well those are way-cool, I don't think I have ever seen any like yours before. What I like is that they are a kinda open surface deck and dirt, mud and water can drain through and not sit on the top, plus they just look what I call "bad-ass-functional".
How long did it take you to build them?

My truck has Carr hoop steps also. I bought them at 4wheelonline. I'm a pretty big guy and I can bounce on these steps.

I got them as unfinished projects and finished them up. Mounting is ugly as it was more functional than pretty, but they work well. They also worked well as sliders when offroad

Truck is sexy... I have some of these on my lifted 98. I like them until your trying to get into the truck a lil tipsy to pass out ( while camping with no tent of course) and your foot slips through. It’s also something to be wary of then it’s moist out they get slick .

Yes, CARR hoops. I'm 200# and they are solid. Can't speak to the slipperyness, I'm in FLA.
