"84 Cab Wiring Harness

I'm getting ready to do a cab swap and was wondering if it would be prudent to replace the harness? All gauges, lights and accessories are currently working but the truck did sit outside in the same place for 13 years facing the west sun.

I don't plan to upgrade anything and want to keep everything stock. I also don't know much about electrical stuff or trouble shooting electrical problems. Buying a harness is not a problem but I would like it to be a premium product and easy to use.

I see where Brothers has a Deluxe 20 Circuit Harness which is completely stock and pretty much a plug and go product. My truck is fully equipped with power windows, locks, cruise control, am/fm stereo, etc. Any ideas, vendors and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

gmachinz, thanks for the reply, I'm going to talk to my body/paint guy tomorrow to see what he thinks about the replacement. In the meantime, I have a few questions about your harness:

1. My truck is an early model '84 C-10 Silverado that is fully equipped. The gauge cluster has a clock but no tach. Is your harness an OE replacement that just plugs in where needed?
2. Are the wires color coded to match the original?
3. Does it have the radio plug with front and back speaker wires color coded as original?
4. Do you include the large wire conduit at the door to cab juncture?
5. Are the lines labeled and do you include installation instructions and schematics?
6. Is the harness made in your shop and do you use 100% copper wire and terminals?
7. Are the connections soldered?
8. Do you provide a separate harness for the front, cab and rear of the truck? Are they sold separate?
9. What is the price with shipping to Conroe, Texas 77303?
10. Do you by any chance sell to Brothers Truck? Their Deluxe 20 Circuit Harness UWH0018 looks and sounds like a pretty good and complete kit, on sale until Oct. 30.

Ok...whew! In order:

1) It is an OEM style replacement for use with gauges-tach harness is also available

2) yes

3) correct radio plug yes-speaker leads no.

4) the grommets are included in my power window/locks door harnesses

5) On stock type replacement I do not include instructions since these are OE style plug n play.

6) yes and I only use genuine Delphi/GM terminals, connectors if possible-very few exceptions. Wiring is USA made and is j1128 rated.

7) yes-every one is dip soldered after crimping

8) yes and yes

10) Nobody carries my Harnessworx line-too many companies want generic style harnesses and 80% or more of my work is factory style with modern upgrades-nobody anywhere offers what Harnessworx can.

This was a busy weekend for underdash kits...so many damn individual components to find and stock-added a few more 3rd party suppliers to my growing list too!

That is a generic harness. Do not even consider it unless you are really good with automotive electrics and have tons of patience. I spent a few months off and on installing a very nice American Autowire universal harness on my 82 C10. That was easily 80 hours of planning and doing, all with lots of diagrams and schematics on hand. It was the 4th harness I had installed over the past 10 years, and I consider myself very good with automotive electrical systems. However, even with that experience and having worked as an electronics tech, it was not a trivial task.

My harness works great and I did a lot of cool things with it, like using 8 gauge SXL wire for the charging circuit and fuse panel feed. But if I had a do-over, I might spend the extra bucks for an OE style harness -- one where you can unplug all the wires under the hood from the fuse panel bulkhead connector. On universal harnesses, all the wires are soldered directly onto the fuse panel. Sure, fewer connectors to cause problems over the years, but a real PITA to install.

Thanks for sharing your experience Mike B and for the advise. The Harnessworx product is quite pricey but is definitely the way I would go if/when I decide to replace it.

I watched a customer install my ready to install dash/fuse panel harness in his CC in 15 minutes. Granted the interior was mostly still stripped out and all new electrical was going in, but once you get to that point, 15 minutes compared to many hours is a lot of time saved-especially if you have to pay a shop to install everything.

Now that I find a hard time believing, especially with having to drop the steering column to make connections, not to mention the challenge of installing the instrument panel connector with the panel in place. Was he The Rubber Band Man?

I said the interior was already stripped-so nothing other than the climate control panel in place. Column was already dropped but in there-and no seats. imo I wouldn’t want to install a dash harness with everything in place lol. I just said 15 minutes to install one...no clue on how long to remove the old crap. Some people take an hour...others might take a month idk lol
