Hey folks, I have a 1978 K30 Suburban. I love it, I really do, but the body was beat to hell, rusted out, rebuilt VERY poorly, then beat to hell again long before I bought it. The drivetrain, suspension etc are in great shape.

I think I am going to strip the body off completely and build my own body on the existing frame. Legal re-vin aside, do anyone have any information on a crazy 4x4 build like this. I have done other crazy projects similar but a lot smaller than this and I would like to reach out to any experts in this matter first.

Any information you can provide would be great!

The used to be a couple companies that built an H1 knock offs called a T Rex based or a Urban Gorilla on a Suburban chassis.

I never knew there were 1-ton square body Suburbans.

Edit: just read about it. Gm made k20 burbs they labeled as k30s for emissions purposes. The general did some funny stuff, eh? Like Sasquatch, they’re out there...

Who knows, that thing might be worth some money as a rarity some day. Might be better off as a resto project than a buggy.

Thank you for welcoming me. I agree, I have always liked the way the square bodies look but my entire suburban body is beyond repair. I have searched junkyards high and low and finding something not only worth buying, transporting and transplanting is about, if not completely impossible. I refuse to scrap another truck just due to rust and poor care. So I figured why not make a beast of my own creation out of the beast I know and love?

I live in AZ too. 50 miles from the closest junkyards, which I have scoured to no avail. Almost nobody has any square bodies left at all and those that do, suck.

I don't know how far away they are, but what about Dessert Valley Auto Parts? They show a couple of Suburbans and crew cabs too. This is what ORD did with a crew cab.
