staggered wheels on their lowered squares? I was thinking of 16/18 or 18/20 combo but cannot seem to find the right tire combination. Either the fronts have too thick sidewall or the rear tires are too tall. I’m lowered 4.5/6 and I have seen some out there but they do not lead on to what tire size combos they are using.

I have staggered on my Trans Am and I’m not sure I’d do it again. You can’t rotate the tires and when they get a little chopped up you just have to get used to it and deal with it getting worse as the tires wear.

I have staggered on my Trans Am and I’m not sure I’d do it again. You can’t rotate the tires and when they get a little chopped up you just have to get used to it and deal with it getting worse as the tires wear.
Good point, I had forgotten about tire rotations.

It does look good though, no denying that.
Maybe for the weekend cruiser it’ll be okay. Just rotate side to side. Front wheels can’t be wider than 8 so rotation is out of the question if I go wider in the rear. The fatter tire in the rear with skinnier front tire is an awesome look in my opinion. That’s what I am after.

I have 8” front and 9.5” on the rear if I remember correctly. My tires are directional so I can’t do any side to side rotation. I’ve got maybe 5000 miles on them in 6 or 7 years so maybe it doesn’t matter that I can’t rotate since the tires will need to be replaced before they wear out. I say go for it and just budget tire money.

That seems to be a fact of life for most old car/truck guys. :( I've been helping a friend finish a 37 Chevy hot rod for the past three years. He bought some new tires around 2005 and put maybe 500 miles on them before starting a complete rebuild of the car. Just last year he had to trash them and buy four more. And heck, I'm almost in the same boat with my 82 C10, driving it less than 1,500 miles/year.

What do you mean by "too thick sidewall"? Width or height?

And you understand the various aspect ratios, like 45, 50, 55, 60, right? Here are some examples:

255-70x15 -- 29" tall, 255 mm at widest point (common tire for square body trucks)

255-55x18 -- 29" tall, 255 mm wide
235-60x18 -- 29.1" tall, 235 mm wide (narrower tire size that will help fender clearance)

235-70x16 -- 29" tall, 235 mm wide
255-65x16 -- 29.1" tall, 255 mm wide

Check out this chart for for options, for example to replace existing tires that are 27" tall, like a 255-60x16. Also take notice of wheel width requirement for various tire sizes.

If JW is gonna be anything like my '77 as far as how often it'll get driven you probably won't have to even worry about rotations anyway so I say go for it! Would be a really cool look especially with the wider stance in the rear :)

I should have said a taller sidewall versus being low profile.

Yessir I understand tire aspect ratios. I was using that site to compare sizes and find the right match. Which now when I think about it, The front can be 26” tall while the rear is 27” and still achieve the “cheap” gear change. The stance will be raked more but I think with a long bed it will look decent.

Might have to I’m hoping to hit all the car shows in town and in LS when they have em. If not every Sunday it will be cruise day with the ole lady. Winter time won’t even leave the garage

This debate comes up on every forum, rarely does some put enough miles on their classic to wear the tires out, either the tires get little to no miles on them and go past the DOT age or the rears are burned off every season. Get the same size you either wear evenly or burn the rears off a season replace them and put new ones on the front and burn the rears again.

That's pretty much where I'm at. The '77 stays plug into the trickle charger all winter long. Usually between Halloween and around Easter depending on when the first snow flies (and salt is thrown on the ground) and when the first good rain hits in the Spring (said salt is washed off the road). :)

The camaro has 275/40/r17 on front and 295/35/r18 on back. And I don't know how I feel about the sidewall thickness diff between them. I don't get to rotate either but, don't put many miles on it.

That’s exactly what I was having issues with when trying to pair tires. My opinion is the fronts should have a smaller sidewall while the rears have just a bit taller. Camaro still looks good btw.
